Joanne Horgan Obituary

HORGAN, Joanne Claire (Power ) Died Saturday, September 20th, following a brief illness. She was 70 years old. Joanne, the daughter of Catherine and John Francis Power, was born, raised and educated in the Boston area. After graduating from Rosindale High School, she studied at Catherine Gibbs and went on later in life to receive a BA degree from Lesley College. Joanne lived in New York City, Beacon Hill and Newton, eventually retiring to Martha's Vineyard. She was briefly married to Neal Lorne Horgan, deceased, with whom she had one daughter, Catherine. Joanne worked for 35 years at the architectural firm of E. Verner Johnson and Associates, beginning as a secretary and retiring as full partner. Joanne's work with the firm included administrative and financial roles but primarily focused on museum design, planning and preservation. She worked on over seventy museum projects worldwide, including several projects for the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C.; The Museum of Science, Boston; The Louvre Museum in Paris, and the New Zealand National Museum. In addition, she co-authored the definitive "Handbook for Museum Collection Storage", published by Unesco in several languages. Joanne retired to Martha's Vineyard in 1993 where she volunteered at the Martha's Vineyard Community Thrift Shop, worked on numerous Family Planning Art shows, served on the board of the Martha's Vineyard Film Society and both served and Chaired on the Vineyard Cultural Council. Her many interests included artwork, gardening and photography. Joanne will be dearly missed by her daughter, Catherine Horgan Bond, her grandson, Tyler Bond, her granddaughter, Kate Bond, their father Philip J. Bond, her twin brother, John (Jack) F. Power Jr., her sister, Katherine Gendreau, her six nephews and nieces and her many friends and colleagues. A private gathering will be held in her honor on Friday, November 7th at 7:00PM at The Hampshire House in Boston one in March in Vineyard Haven - date tba.
