Thomas Downey Obituary

DOWNEY, Thomas S. Of Newton, formerly of La Habra, CA, passed away on November 14, 2008 from Non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Beloved son of Wilbur and Rosemarie Downey, brother of Robert and Kathleen Downey, loving husband of Laurel Farnsworth and father of Stephen Downey and Sarah Farnsworth. After retiring from his work at Cisco Systems, Tom became a high school mathematics teacher and taught at both Newton South High School and the Rivers School of Weston, MA. Tom was an active member of his church, the First Unitarian Society in Newton, as well as in local tennis groups and enjoyed most spending time with his family. Memorial services will be held at 2:00pm on Saturday, the 22nd of November, 2008 at the First Unitarian Society in Newton, 1326 Washington St, West Newton. Donations in lieu of flowers may be sent in loving memory of Tom Downey to either the Wellness Community or the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

Laurel, I am so sorry for your loss; although I have had only the briefest encounters with your late husband, those encounters were enough to show me how nice a guy he was and how much he adored you. I have lost a number of great friends these past two years and only can imagine your grief. My deepest sympathy.

No one had a stronger will to live; fought harder to stay alive, than did Tom. Members of his support group celebrated his highs and hurt when he was low. I will miss him.
