Mary Hawes Obituary

HAWES, Mary (Morrissey) Of Needham, passed from this life after an illness, at the age of 96. Mary was born and grew up in Charlestown. She was the daughter of parents from Newfoundland, Canada. She was part of a close knit family of eleven children that, through hard work and diligence, ended up living the American Dream. Mary married Captain Robert Hawes of Boston during the Second World War. She raised their six children imbuing them with the virtues and goals that she learned in her younger years - education, piety, honesty, optimism, charity, and kindness. In 1968, with her children no longer needing her, Mary decided to reenter the work force. She landed a job at Boston College working in the Registrar's office. She was a devoted and committed part of the BC community for the next 40 years. Mary only retired from her full time position at the incredible age of 95. Mary has been an inspiration to her children and friends for all these years. Mary was the beloved wife of the late Col. Robert Hawes. Mother to Robert Hawes, Jr. of Charleston, SC, Mary Hawes Mahoney of Sudbury, Philip Hawes of Potomac, MD, Richard Hawes of Chatham, NY, and the late Barbara Hawes and Thomas Hawes. Loving grandmother to twelve grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Sister to Gertrude, William, and Joan Morrissey; Sister Rita Morrissey, CSJ; Dorothy MacGillivray; and the late Thomas, Edward and Francis Morrissey; and Helen McMillian. Devoted aunt to 62 nieces and nephews. Funeral from the George F. Doherty and Sons Funeral Home, 1305 Highland Ave., NEEDHAM, Friday, December 5th at 10 AM. Boston College will not be the same without Mary helping students with their transcripts and records. But her spirit and her happy smile will always be part of our memories of BC.
