Robert Powell Obituary

POWELL, Robert L. Age 71 of Dorchester, died Tuesday, November 25, 2008 after a brief illness. Born in Malden, MA the son of the late Frank J. and Margaret Powell of Dorchester, MA. Beloved husband of Harriett Desmond Powell; father of Robert L. Jr., Kenneth F. and Rosemarie L. (Powell) Thompson; grandfather of Jada. Bob "Tootie" Powell served in the Marine Corps in Japan, Korea and Okinawa. Appointed to the Boston Fire Department in October 1965, Bob's first assignment was Engine Squad 11 in East Boston. In 1968 he transferred to Engine Company 24 on Warren Street in Roxbury, one of the most active fire companies during that period of time. A community relations minority recruiter for the dept. later led Bob to host the first informal meeting of the Mass. Society of Vulcans in his living room in 1969, which culminated into monthly meetings for four years, increasing minority representation within the dept. from 19 in 1975 to 280 in 1984. Presently, there are 475 minority firefighters in the City Of Boston. Powell was also an active member of St. Leo Parish in Dorchester during the 70's, a board member of the Haitian Multiservice Center, Dorchester and a community activist that spanned a diversity of neighborhoods. He leaves a brother, Mitchell Powell Holbrook, MA; sisters Marie Tucker, Boston, Marilyn Forbes, Texas and Patricia Desmond, Springfield, MA and son in law Jamie. Services will be held at St. Matthews Parish, 33 Stanton St. Dorchester, MA Thursday Dec. 4, 2008 10am-11am. Wake, funeral service begins 11am. In Lieu of flowers make contributions to Robert L. Thank you for the support that the Vulcan Organization has given to the Powell family during this time of loss. The pictures that have been posted on this site, the words of encouragement and your presence means more than you could ever know. Bob gave a piece of himself to this honorable profession. As I witness your camaraderie, I sometimes wonder if I should have taken Uncle Toot up on becoming a firefighter myself. Blessings

My heartfelt condoleances to Harriett, the extended Powell family, the Vulcan Society and the entire Haitian community of Boston. I am deeply saddened over the loss of Bob (affectionately known as "Mr POWELL" by generations of Haitian compatriots/brother & sisters). An admirable man who stood tall in the face of injustice and steadfast in the long and complicated struggle for social justice. Mr. Powell is and will forever be this great and tireless Humanitarian who gave it all to make us a better and stronger community. As we mourn his passing it is fitting to recognize that his labor, love and legacy live on in each and everyone of us whose's life he so profoundly touched. Bonne Nuit, Mr. Powell. Dear Harriett and Family,
Thank You for sharing Bob with us as a founder, member, friend and mentor. Bob will be missed, if it were not for him there would be no Vulcan Society and all of the many changes that he influenced on the Boston fire Department and across the state of Massachusetts. It is often said "all that we are we owe" and every Black firefighter owes their job to Bob: the consent decree, recruitment drives, 1841 committee, progressive discipline code, reading list for promotional exams and more....Even after he retired he continued his work to guide us with his wisdom and history....Our prayers and thoughts go out to you and your family...and we will always be here for you when you need us....

To Powell family, my thoughts and prayers are with you in your time of grief. May your memories bring you comfort. You need to know that Bob "Tootie" Powell spirit and influence was way past just Boston. Bobby reached and touch people all across America. Whenever Bob was in another city at a regional meeting of the IABPFF he always return to the local restaurants that he had been to before and renewed old friendships that he had in those cities.

Bob "Tootie" Powell sense of history and recording it was amazing. Bob was always dedicated to the hiring of blacks as firefighters. Even after his retirement from the Boston Fire Department, Bob was still working on increasing black representation within the Boston Fire Department.

Bob was a big influence on me because believe in documenting the history of black firefighters. Bob Powell was a great ambassador for the City of Boston and it was my pleasure to know him.

Lawrence E. Quinn Sr.,Historian-International Association of Black Professional Fire Fighters

December 3, 2008

To the Powell Family I offer my heartfelt Condolence in your time of grief and sorrow. Bob was a mentor to me as a member of the International Association of Black Professional Fire Fighters;a generation of fire fighters before me who showed us the way,the truth and the light of a bright future. I stand upon the shoulders of all those who came before me in the fire service who stood for justice and not just us. Bob knew which side of history that he wanted to be remembered for. Many are called but few are chosen and he knew why. " Seek good, and not evil, that ye may live: and so the Lord, the God of hosts, shall be with you, as ye have spoken. " Amos 5:14 " But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you." Matthew 6:33. Your service to the I.A.B.P.F.F. shall not be forgotten; the History Committee and the I.A.B.P.F.F.-Historian Lawrence E. Quinn Sr. will chronicle your fire life. Semper Fidelis
