John Carroll Obituary

92, of 43 Charing Cross Road, South Dennis, died on Tuesday, August 21, 2007 in Holy Trinity Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Worcester after an illness. He leaves his wife of 54 years, Nellie B. (Coughlin) Carroll; two sons, John J. Carroll, Jr. and his wife Mary Palermo of East Boston and Walter F. Carroll and his wife Debbie of Lansing, IL; two daughters, Mary Jude Carroll and Catherine Carroll Dubin and her husband Stephen, all of Holden; a sister, Flora Antonucci of Framingham; five grandchildren, Kristen, Meghan and John Carroll, Mary and Casey Dubin. His brother, William Carroll and his sister, Catherine DiManno, predeceased him. He was born and raised in Somerville, son of Martin and Mary J. (McDougal) Carroll, and lived in Waltham and Holden, before moving to South Dennis in 1977. He was a graduate of Somerville High School. Mr. Carroll was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II, having served in Company B, 701st Tank Destroyer Battalion in the European African Middle Eastern Theatre, where he was awarded the Purple Heart. He worked many years for the MBTA in Boston before retiring in 1977. He was a member of St. Pius X Church in South Yarmouth, was an avid Red Sox fan and enjoyed his close friends on Cape Cod. The Funeral Mass for Mr. Carroll will be held at 11 AM on Friday, August 24 in St. Pius X Church, Station Rd, South Yarmouth. Burial will follow in Oak Ridge Cemetery, Rte. 134, South Dennis. Memorial donations may be made to Holy Trinity Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, 300 Barber Ave., Worcester, MA 01606. God had a perfect plan for John to touch the lives of others through the life that John would lead. Now the day has come when his work on earth is finished and he is living in heaven with his Lord and Savior.
He was a very special person and a dear friend.

Mr. Carroll,
Sir, I didn't know you, but I would just like to say thank you for your service and sacrifice for our Country when you served with the U.S. Army during WW II in North Africa and Italy in the 701st Tank Destroyer Battion. And t your family and loved ones, I wish to extend my deepest sympathy. The 701st saw extensive as supporting various divisions throughout WW II starting with the 1st Armored and 1st Infantry Divisions in North Africa in 1942;1943 and later in Italy from 1943 to the end of the war in 1945.
