I have a beautiful painting of a sunflower that Gabby gave me. The painting she made is in my kitchen and it brings me much joy and good memories of the days Gabby and I worked together in Brookline. Sending love to her family on the anniversary of her passing.

Dear Holger,

In the surprising way that life sometimes twists and turns (which, as you grow older, you will discover happens far more frequently than one would ever have thought possible), I am writing to you on this sad occasion just one day after having first made your acquaintance. We met yesterday at Crane Beach (I'm the guy with the elaborate sand castle that made such an impression), and we ended up conversing afterward on a wide range of topics, from architecture, to art, to books, to science, etc.

The next day, I was intrigued enough about what you had told me about your father's work with atomic laser-cooling at M.I.T. to look him up. Google being Google, a simple search can often yield a plethora of unexpected results, and...well, here I am again.

As the father of two boys myself (one of whom is not much older than you), I can tell you with some authority that the positive influence of parents can never be overestimated. My impression of you was that you are an exceedingly intelligent, informed, mature, and well-spoken young man. Obviously, I did not know your mother; but just on the basis of our brief conversation, I am certain she had every reason to be immensely proud of her son - of what he is now, and what he will grow to be. And of your mother's contribution toward your upbringing - all those small, countless, nameless influences that combine to help give form and direction to a person's innate qualities - you too have much to be proud.

The best of a mother lives on in her children. Please do not forget that, or forget her, as you enter high school and begin the next stage of your life.

Though a stranger, I send my sincere condolences for your loss to you and your family.
