Neil Williams Swinton Jr.

Neil Swinton Obituary

A Physician at the Lahey Clinic for thirty-seven years died September 4, 2007 of lung cancer. A man of calm & even temperament & a great listener, Dr. Swinton communicated support & empathy to family, friends and patients. An avalanche of letters from patients and their families extoiling his kindness and caring arrived at his retirement in 2003. Many were from people whose loved ones he treated early in his career. Friends & colleagues valued both his patient listening and his thoughtful responses. A native of Newton, Massachusetts, and a fourth generation physician Dr. Swinton was a graduate of Phillips Academy Andover, Haverford College and the College of Physicians and Surgeons, Columbia University. He trained at St. Luke's Hospital in New York City & spent two years in the Cardiology Service at Walter Reed General Hospital. Drafted during the Vietnam War, he was awarded the U.S. Army Certificate of Achievement Award, an honor unusual for a draftee. He greatly admired the cardiologists he served with at Walter Reed and considered it one of the best experiences of his medical career. Vice-Chairman of the Department of Medicine, with his colleague Donald Breslin Dr. Swinton essentially established Vascular Medicine as a department independent of cardiology at the Lahey Clinic. When the Lahey Clinic moved from Kenmore Square, Boston to Burlington, MA, he was Director of the Primary Care Clinic (1974-80) that opened before the new medical center was completed. As chairman of a newly established Professional Affairs Committee, he developed a peer review system that anticipated regulations later established throughout the field. He also used the committee as a vehicle for assisting the staff to deliver improved medical care. In an era when women were rarely allowed flexibility to work out family and professional responsibilities, he argued for accommodating the needs of women doctors. He leaves his wife of fifty years Elizabeth de Sabato Swinton, his son Neil W. Swinton, III of Longmeadow, MA, three daughters Elizabeth S. Schoen of Marietta, GA, Barbara S. deButts of McLean, VA, Anne S. Ruggles of Weston, MA, and 9 grandchildren. A Memorial Service will be held at 3 pm, Saturday, September 15 at the Church of the Redeemer, 379 Hammond St., Chestnut Hill, MA. In lieu of flowers, contributions should be sent to the Neil Swinton Jr. Endowment Fund, Vascular Medicine Dept, the Lahey Clinic Foundation, 41 Mall Rd, Burlington, MA 01805 Att: Philanthropy Dept.

Dr. Swinton was my physician for five years before he retired. He was kind, generous, competent, respectful, and caring. He was a great doctor, and worthy of all the good words people have to say about him.

I am truly saddened to hear of my good friend Neil's passing. To his wife and children I offer my deepest sympathy. Neil and I became friendswhen he first came to Burlington to direct the primary unit before Lahey made their move to bring the hospital here. In those early days many people thought it was an emergency facility and often very urgent patients would appear in front of Neil. I was called to assist in getting these patients to an acute facility ASAP and on occasion Neil had to ride in the ambulance with me. I have to say that we were a great team and never lost one of these patients in transport. Neil's calm demeanor went a long way in assuring that I did my job to the best of my ability without panic which would have had much different results. Neil and Burton both worked side by side at the facility and I worked side by side with them. They were two of the finest physicians and gentlemen that you would ever meet. Neil however stood out to me as having the attitude that his patients were better than him and that he owed each of them his time and knowledge. OObviously when I had heart and vascular problems there was only one person I would place my life unto and that was Neil. He did that rare thing and that was to honestly listen to me and to my opinions. We got along famously and I can say that on a few very emergent situations, I probably would not be here today if not for Neil's expert treatment. He was always there when I needed him as I am sure he was for everyone. My heart is saddened today to know that this world has lost such an outstanding physician and gentleman. I offer you my prayers and I thank you for sharing Neil with me. It was an honor for me to know and work with Neil. There will never be another Dr. Swinton but I will carry his memory with me forever. I know this was long but I wanted you to know what a great man Neil was and the impact he had on so many. God Bless him and God be with you as you go forward without our beloved Neil
