I’m in shock hearing about Vincenzo Tringali’s death. It takes me back some 19 years ago when I first met Carmela and her son Christopher because my son Randy was in the same summer program in Medford. We had gone on a boat ride through the harbor and from the afternoon lunch in the park so began a life long friendship. We had Enzo & Carmela over to our apartment to watch Italian comedy tapes; old VCR tapes of the Italian comedians spending the evening laughing and having fun times. Later on with the birth of my son Vincenzo Jr. we honored Enzo & Carmela to be the Padrino e Madrina {Godparents} of our infant son and later he was always affectionately termed as Compare and Carmela as Commare.

So many memories flood through my mind. I remember him coming one year to a birthday party for Vinny and it just so happened to be the exact same day as the World Cup Soccer was being played. There you found Compare and my husband inside watching the game. He was a devout soccer fan and true to his team! Even though he wasn’t much of a football fan, he still came to watch our son Vinny participate in the Pop Warner football games. He wouldn’t miss it for the world. He enjoyed family and events the kids had.

Another time I went down to Golden Ave where he was demolishing his first floor apartment. He was knee deep in torn down plaster and he was so happy in what he was creating. Compare still would greet you with a smile. With Compare, he wouldn’t just tear down a portion of something, he would get carried away and tear it all down. This was his style. This was his flair. As if his own property wasn’t enough work, out of his own kindness he came to my house and helped me gut out my 3rd floor bathroom. This was the type of man he was. Always willing to help everyone out. While another man would panic at a clogged drain, Compare would calmly say just get a snake and snake it. With Compare doing the work, you knew it was getting done right.

For a couple of years, I was invited to the summer feast of Saint Dominic. I noticed Enzo’s admiration in taking the saint out from the church, ever so careful not to drop it. I later learned that he had built the stand on which they carried the saint. He would take pride in the way he carried the saint around the streets of the North End and his devotion to the society was never ending. The many dances, the family occasions all come flooding back to mind.

Compare may you rest in peace until one day when we are all at rest and reunited again. Amen

Vincenzo ci lascia prematuramente.
