Hy Gloth Obituary

Of Longmeadow, MA & Boynton Beach, FL, died peacefully at home on October 17, 2007 with his wife and son by his side. Born on December 3, 1914 in Springfield, MA, Hy was the son of Rose and Max Gloth. Hy had a twin brother, Nathan, and an older brother, Israel, who both pre-deceased him. Hy attended local schools, graduating from Commerce High School. He attended Northeastern University where he studied accounting. During WW II, Hy served in the United States Army and was stationed in the Pacific theater of operations, including in Hawaii. Hy also was recognized for his superb marksmanship as a sharp-shooter, & rose to the rank of Second Lieutenant during the war. When Hy returned from the war, Roz & Hy's family began to bloom, as they had three children: Joanne, David and Elaine. In 1957, Roz and Hy moved to Longmeadow where they created a home in which to raise their family. Hy supported his family by founding Hy Gloth and Co. where he made a career as an Auctioneer. Some of Hy's notable auctions included the Milner Hotel and Honiss Fish House of Hartford. Ahead of his time, Hy also invested in and restructured small businesses, and later sold them off in pieces. Later in Hy's career, he served as President & Trustee of many commercial & residential real estate entities in New England, concentrating his holdings in Greater Boston. He earned a preservation award for historic renovations. Hy never considered retiring, as he loved his work. Throughout his life, he worked hard, earning the respect of all he encountered. Hy's handshake was known as his word, which was always good. In business & in life, he held the values of honesty & integrity highly, & instilled these values in his family. Hy is survived by his wife of 60 years, Rosalyn (Lubowitz) Gloth, his children & their spouses, Joanne & Arthur Rome, Dr. David Gloth, Drs. Elaine and Edward Merker, & his seven grandchildren, Jill & Raphael Cohen, Jeffrey Markowitz, Leah Beth, Seth, Laurie, Ami & Benjamin Merker. Hy will be sorely and deeply missed most of all for his kindness and warmth. His great sense of humor was one of his trademarks; everybody liked Hy. Those who were lucky to know Hy will remember him for his unfaltering ethics and moral fiber, his amazing mathematical mind, his honesty, his generosity, his support for the people he loved, his dedication to Judaism, and the kindness in his eyes. Above all else, Hy was truly a kind and warm-hearted gentleman. Hy was a longtime member of Temple Beth El and the Melha Temple Shrine. The funeral will be held at Ascher-Zimmerman Funeral Home at 44 Sumner Avenue in Springfield at 12:00 noon on Friday, October 19th with burial in Beth El Cemetery. Shiva will be at the Gloth residence with services at 7:30 PM Sunday thru Wednesday. Memorial contributions can be made to Temple Beth El, 979 Dickinson St., Springfield, MA 01108 or to the Jewish Nursing Home, 770 Converse St., Longmeadow, MA 01106.

I am so sorry to hear of your loss. I have not been in contact with any of Hy's relatives for a few years, but I have been researching the Gloth genealogy for a long time. I have some interesting information regarding relatives in Argentia. The attached photo was sent to me by someone there who had visited Hy's brother Nathan in 1950. Please contact me. I would like to reestablish communication between our two Gloth branches.

Mr. Gloth,
Sir, I didn't know you but I would just like to say thank you for your service and sacrifice for our Country when you served with the U.S. Army in the Pacific during WW II and for being a member of the Greatest Generation. And to your family and loved ones, I wish to extend my deepest sympathy.
