I first met John at National Taiwan Normal University, where we both taught on a part-time basis. We would get together for a meal when our schedules would permit it... And yes, John was a very intelligent gentleman... In addition to his expertise in Chinese, I understand that he excelled in other languages as well... RIP, friend...

I met John when we were graduate students in Chinese studies at Harvard fifty years ago. We became good friends and in later years I always looked forward to seeing him in Taipei or during his summer visits home.
We talked about anything and everything, from China and food to literature and politics -- lots of politics. He was one of the finest, most intelligent, and most interesting people I have ever known. I will miss him greatly.

We were in the same year at BC High but different home rooms. At BC we shared a number of classes--Latin, Greek, philosophy among others. John would borrow my philosophy text the night before an exam to study which made sense since that way he saved the purchase price of a heavy and under appreciated tome and could spend his money on Arabic short stories which he used to teach himself the language. That came in handy when he got his Fulbright and moved into intermediate Arabic at the American University in Cairo. Fascinating fellow. I admired him greatly.
