Herbert Anderton Obituary

93, recently of Cotuit and Yarmouth, MA, died at Seal Rock Nursing Home on October 28, 2007. He was a retired Vice-President of Liberty Mutual Insurance Co. in Boston, MA. He was born in Winthrop, MA, raised in Winthrop, MA, and educated in the Winthrop Public Schools, graduating, in the Class of 1931. He attended MIT before going to work for Liberty Mutual in 1933. He was Vice-President and Manager of Reinsurance and Foreign Insurance when he retired in 1979, after 46 years. During those years, he was active in insurance industry affairs, serving on the Board of Directors of the Foreign Credit Insurance Association, an association of 52 stock and mutual insurance companies formed at President Kennedy's request to write commercial export credit insurance in partnership with the Export-Import Bank of the United States, from 1967 to 1979 and as its Chairman from 1972 to 1975. He was a member of the Executive Committee of the Excess and Casualty Reinsurance Association from 1968 to 1979, and served as its Chairman of two years. He was a member of the International Insurance Advisory Council for many years. Mr. Anderton was instrumental in forming the Liberty International Agency, Inc., a brokerage subsidiary of Liberty Mutual and served as its President until he retired. He was a Director of Helmsman (Underwriting) Limited and Deputy Chairman of Liberty Mutual Insurance Co. (Massachusetts) Limited, both subsidiaries of Liberty Mutual in London. He initiated the formation of both companies and was responsible for their operation from 1965 until he retired in 1979. He was associated with community affairs in Needham, MA, where he and his family lived for 30 years before moving to Cotuit in 1980. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the Needham YMCA for 15 years and President for one year, then served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees until 1980. He was a Deacon of the Congregational Church of Needham for many years. After moving to Cotuit, he became active in the Cotuit Bay Shores Association serving as a member of the Board of Directors for six years and Chairman for two years. He continued on the Board as an ex-officio member working on a project with the US Army Corps of Engineers until just recently when the project was completed. He was a member of the Cotuit Federated Church, and more recently served as its Assistant Treasurer. Mr. Anderton is survived by one daughter, Dale A. Cormack and her husband John Cormack, both of Old Orchard Beach, ME, a son Steven C. Anderton of Marblehead, MA, grandchildren, Bruce E. Cormack of Jamaica Plain, MA, Pamela (Cormack) Ouellette of Durham, ME, Neil A. Cormack of Portland, ME, and Mathew Anderton of Newton, MA; and two great grandchildren, Emma Cormack-Pitts and Maria Cormack-Pitts, both of Durham, ME. Mr. Anderton's wife, Jean Stackpole Anderton died in July, 1994. Visiting hours are 2-5 PM on Friday, November 2, 2007 at the Doane, Beal & Ames Funeral Home, 160 West Main St., Hyannis, MA. A Graveside Service will be at 11 AM Saturday, November 3, 2007 in Newton Cemetery, Walnut St., Newtonville, MA. A Memorial Service will be at 2 PM Saturday November 17, 2007 at Cotuit Federated Church in Cotuit. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the charity of your choice.
