Alicia Russell Obituary

61, of the Watch Hill section of Westerly, RI, died Monday, November 12 at the University of Massachusetts Memorial Medical Center after she and her daughter were struck by a car while crossing a street Sunday night in Putnam, Conn. Her daughter, Amanda Fortune Russell, a student at the Hyde School in Woodstock, Conn., was treated at Day Kimball Hospital in Putnam and released. Mrs. Russell was the wife of Edwin Larson Russell, chief executive officer of Horizon Investments, which is based in Westerly. A native of Philadelphia, she was one of five children born to Robert Trainor Zintl and Rosemary Zintl McCune. Upon receiving a bachelor of arts degree in history in 1967 from Newton College of the Sacred Heart in Chestnut Hill, Mass., Mrs. Russell worked as a research assistant to Oscar Handlin, the Pulitzer Prize-winning historian and Carl M. Loeb University Professor, Emeritus, Harvard University. She and Mr. Russell married in 1972 and they lived in Manhattan where she worked in the textile fibers division of DuPont. She and her family also lived in Chicago; Brussels, Belgium; Essex, Conn.; Rumson, NJ; and Duluth, Minn., before settling in Westerly. Mrs. Russell made many friends and contributions to the communities where she and her family resided. In Westerly, RI, she worked as an elementary reading specialist and English as a Second Language instructor. She was also a literacy volunteer, a member of the board of trustees for the Westerly Public Library and a volunteer at the Hyde School. Her many joys included painting, gardening, yoga and the company of family and friends - also, of her beloved dog, Schatzie. In addition to her husband and daughter, Mrs. Russell is survived by a son, Robert Larson Russell, of Westerly; a brother, Paul Andrew Zintl and his wife, Lisa Frost Zintl of Brookline, Mass., and their two sons, Sam and Bob; a sister, Amy Zintl Koch and her husband, William, of Norwell, Mass., and their son, Thomas. Also her stepfather, LeRoy K. McCune of Greenville, Del., and several nieces: Colby Zintl of San Francisco and her children, Joe, India and Jack Marcus; Anna Zintl of New York City; and Elizabeth Cole Wilson and Sarah Wilson, both of Los Angeles. Mrs. Russell was predeceased by a brother, Robert T. Zintl Jr., and sister, Anne Elizabeth Zintl. A memorial service for Mrs. Russell will be held Saturday, 11 AM, at Watch Hill Chapel, 5 Bluff Ave., Westerly, RI. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, contributions be made in Mrs. Russell's memory to the Warm Shelter, 56 Spruce St., Westerly, RI 02891.{M1} Arrangements by Buckler Johnston Funeral Home, RHODE ISLAND.

Dear Family,

I was in the class of 1967 at Newton College with Lisa. Some forty years later, I remember her as a warm and lovely person, who exuded an air of calm and kindness.

May God and the wonderful memory of Lisa comfort you.

My thoughts and prayers are with Lisa's family. I met Lisa (a classmate at Newton College of The Sacred Heart Class of 1967)some 40 years ago. This is a tragic loss for all of us. She was "some gal" then and I am certain she remained the same these past 40+ years.

So sorry to hear of your loss. We did not know Alicia but feel a connection because we live now in the McCune house in Greenville, where she grew up. In one of those "small world" examples, she was also a friend of my sister, Becky Miller, during the time Alicia lived in Duluth. They enjoyed trips down to the Cities together.
