In his uncomplicated way, dad was very complicated. He was easy to love, but not as easy to understand. The last of 8 children born to Mary and James Parker, dad left his mark on all of us here today.
As a husband, he loved mom, through all of their ups downs. And try as she might to say otherwise she loved him.
As a father, he was a constant provider for us children. Growing up we were the five M’s, Michael, Melanie, Mark, Michelle and Melissa, years later we officially opened up our hearts and home to Jacob and Lynn Ann who obviously didn’t get the whole M thing. Dad and mom never let us know how rough the bad times were and always made sure we had what we needed. Dad accomplished this by working two or more jobs most of the time when we were growing up.
“Shhh! your father is sleeping.” was a constant refrain that I don’t know any of us really understood back then. We do now Dad, thank you.
We were too big to be a Disneyland family, but Dad made sure that we did things when we could. Back when gas was well under a dollar, we would all pile into the car, van or station wagon for long drives to nowhere. From weeklong camping trips, to Sunday drives to Chestnut Ridge and for ice cream at the airport. These weren’t fancy trips or vacations, but ask anyone of us and we’ll smile when they are mentioned.
As a grand and great grandfather he was a safe lap for his 26 grand kids to sit on. And if they were lucky, he would say the right name the first time he called out to them. Some might think that this was a sign of senility or old age; But Dad was always like that. My official name growing up was Michaelmelaniemark! Because he would always stop once he got to the right name.
As an Uncle, we’ve heard countless stories from nieces and nephews about the love and generosity of my father over the years. We thank you for sharing them and keeping his memory strong.
If we were to paint a picture of Dad, it would be a portrait of a smiling curmudgeon. Dad always said no, even as he was pulling his wallet out or grabbing the car keys to take one of us someplace.
There is so much to say about Dad. He had three loves, after his children: one was mom, another Brutus our St Bernard dog, and Boccee’s Pizza, in no particular order. He was an avid hiker, most would think he was hunter, but I guess when you catch as few deer as he did, you’re more of a hiker. He loved his westerns and country music. He loved his freedom and the fact that his van allowed him to do things that his legs no longer would. He loved it when former kids from the neighborhood would drive through, stopping to say hello and share a memory of life at 759 Smith Street. See we were the Kool-Aide house, dad always complained yet he never shut the door.
We’ll have time for tears and laughter today, tonight and tomorrow. Dad has left an indelible mark on his wife, his children, other family members and the countless friends he has acquired over the years. We’ll all keep your memory strong Dad, but please don’t be mad if a tear or two escape our eyes, we’ll miss you and there can be no replacement.
