Ruth Moroney Obituary

MORONEY - Ruth L. (Turner) born December 30, 1914 to James Clifton Turner and Louise Migge Turner. Passed from this life peacefully at the Center for Hospice in Cheektowaga on June 30, 2008. Devoted and beloved wife of the late James Joseph Moroney. Deeply loved and loving mother of Carol Louise (Paul E.) Weitz and Janet Mary (Gary) Calderwood. Dear grandmother of Carolyn Louise Bosley, James Paul Weitz (Bethany), Elizabeth Sarah Calderwood, Christopher Graham Calderwood and Chalkley Calderwood. Doting great-grandmother of Michael and Matthew Bosley, Jonathan and Daniel Weitz, and Talullah Calderwood-Pratt. Longtime close friend of Terry and Marie Sutton and their extended family. Member of a large group of lifelong friends, all of whom predeceased her. Ruth was born and raised on Buffalos West Side and graduated from Lafayette High School. In her youth she was fond of ice skating, cooking, the movies, and sewing. She moved to South Buffalo in 1933 and lived on Edgewood Avenue for the next 55 years; then relocated to what she called a pretty posh apartment in West Seneca for the next 20. She was a phenomenal seamstress and sewed her own evening gowns for dancing in the 30s, her wedding dress in 1939, and her daughters wardrobes through their young adulthoods, as well as their prom and wedding gowns. She sewed, by hand, her first great-grandchilds Christening gown. She was also an accomplished quilter and her family treasures the keepsake quilts that she lovingly handmade. Ruth taught quilting at the Senior Center on Grand Island and crafts at Grace Lutheran Church in South Buffalo. Ruth was also an avid outdoors lover - of the woods, campfires, birds, especially ducks and cardinals, and cabin-camping at Allegany State Park. In 1957 she and her husband built their own cabin on an acre of wooded land in Limestone, NY. It was their joy and their haven for the next thirty years until his passing, and her comfort and solace for many years thereafter. In recent years Ruth thoroughly enjoyed her great-grandchildren, played countless games of cards with them, cheered for them in their activities and participated in family events with gusto. Her family will miss her sense of humor and her hearty laughter, her pies and cookies, her great joy for life and her endless and tireless caring. A private memorial celebration will be held by the family.
