Father Penkaul,
Our last time with you was at a 50th wedding anniversary and that will always be a special memory for us. You were taken so unexpectedly, we still expect you to be walking down the aisle at 10:30 Sunday Mass to help with Holy Communion. Still you are in a much better place, in the arms of our Father. Father Penkaul pray for us!
We miss you so much!
Much love!

My family and I are very sad to hear of Father Joe's death but we know he is in heaven where he deserves to be. Much love has flowed from him to our family and back to him. We will always remember how he loved to eat and will miss his great sense of humor and great stories! We were honored to have had him for our priest in St. Mary's in Belmont, New York.

"Papa Guseppi",
You have been a huge part of our lives ever since Dad brought you home to meet our family back in the mid 1970's when I was just a little girl. You quickly became an Uncle to all six of us Doyle kids. I have so many wonderful and silly memories. Your incessant teasing and rough housing for one, you referred to me as "Miss Piggy" from The Muppet Show{due to my adolescent demeanor}. As we grew older, you were ALWAYS there for us to bend and ear and lend guidance. You performed most of our marriage ceremonies and all of our children grew to know you and love you just as much and are blessed with their own wonderful memories. You graced us with attending many of our family gatherings, holidays and of course the VACATIONS! You were the brother my Dad never had and I know how very much he will miss you too. We are all so saddened by our loss of you in our lives. We take comfort in knowing you are at peace with God now. Much Love, Shannon

To the Family of Father Joe Penkaul:
I met Father Joe on one occasion while I was in the Air Force Reserves and a member of the Niagara Falls Police Department. At that time he was the Chaplain at Attica Prison. There was a group of us having a beer and I didnt know Joe was a priest. After being officially introduced I was embarrassed because of how I was speaking and not knowing I was in the presence of a man of the cloth. Joe was great. He asked me how long had it had been since I had been to church and confession. I told him it had been a long time and that I had issues with the Catholic Church. He listened to my reasons why I hadnt been to mass in years. Over a beer he heard my confession and gave me absolution. After I left Joe that night I went back to the church and have been going to mass ever since that fateful meeting. He took the time to bring a lost sheep back to the flock. I owe my renewed love of God to Father Joe. He was a great person and Priest. I have thought of him every day for the last 25 years. May god bless him and his family.

Joe and I were Chaplains together at the Attica C. F. He was always an advocate for what was right. He had the unique ability to find out what was right and take a stand. He made a difference. He was a great man.

Father Joe,
You were such a great friend to me during good times and bad. You gave me strength during Linda's death. We would talk and you would say to me "Did you come here to cry" or are we going to discuss what is going on. And always asked me, "what did you do now". But each and every time you said that, I loved you more. I would ask you questions and you would give me an answer that made no sense and then you would roll your eyes and laugh because I always believed what you said. You encouraged me to become a Chaplin, to join the Associates of the Sister of St. Joseph. And when you would walk by me in church, you would be saying hello to everyone, then look at me and say "Sister". My friend, I will miss you more than you can realize. You had such a spirit about you, loved by all at the parish. Normally I would ask you "what are we going to do" your with God now, you left us, and you would say "Don't get nervous, pray on it, everyone has to die, even me. I'd smile, you would smile, and then you would say, how many more people are out there for confession? I'll miss my friend and I will always have a special place in my heart for you. I'll see you again up in Heaven and I will not be afraid because I know you will be there and you'll say, I told you it's better up here!
