MILTON CROUCH Obituary

MILTON H. CROUCH BURLINGTON - Milton H. Crouch died peacefully on May 5, 2009 at Vermont Respite House in Williston after a valiant battle with cancer. He was born in Martinsville, Va. in 1934, the son of Kathleen Growe and Milton H. Crouch. Milton earned two advanced degrees and held faculty positions in the libraries serving the University of Florida, Pennsylvania State University and the University of Vermont, retiring from UVM in 2000. At UVM and in the state of Vermont, he was instrumental and often a guiding force in achieving the many innovations and advances in library services of the past several decades. In light of this, in 1991 he was honored by the Vermont Library Association with the Sarah C. Hager Award for outstanding service and significant contributions to the field of librarianship in Vermont. Milton also served on the primary governing council of the American Library Association. In retirement, he was the editor of Hermes, the newsletter of UVM retired faculty and administrative officers; he also served on that organization's governing board for six years. Milton enjoyed collecting early American antiques and vintage Oriental textiles, attending auctions and antique shows throughout New England. Friends, fine art, musical events and maintaining his small flower garden gave him great pleasure. Friends, old and new, will fondly remember Milton for his gentle humor, kindness and uncommon generosity. His immediate family lives in Indiana: Mother, sister Mary Linda DeLong, her husband Greg and her married daughters, Kim Burton and Kerry Detamore. Family and friends are thankful for the loving care given to Milton by Dr. Steven Ades and the oncology staff at Fletcher Allen, by VNA Hospice Program nurses and Vermont Respite House staff. At Milton's request there will be no services; interment will be at Lakeview Cemetery, Burlington. Gifts in his memory may be made to a charity of one's choice.

Dear Milton, our friendship was short, only a few years, but I was so honored to have met you. My visits home just won't be the same. Thank you for your devoted friendship with my mom, and we are grateful for the all fun and interesting times that we did get to enjoy with you. Peace to Milton, friends and family.

I just learned yesterday of Milton's passing. He was a mentor to me in more ways than he knew. We didn't meet until his career at UVM was finished but he continues to influence me to this day.

I so much enjoyed his Virginia accent and hearing his stories of his past.
