Robert Babin (Longpre) Obituary

1986–2022

It is with broken hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Robert Paul Babin on September 4th, 2022 at the age of 36. Born January 16th 1986, he attended Saint Ann's school, St. Patrick's CVI, and PACI secondary school. He moved to BC to seek adventure for a few years before returning to Thunder Bay; he worked in telemarketing until his health issues prevented him from continuing. Rob was a man of many talents: musician, artist, writer, philosopher, gardener. He was a true and loyal friend and a savior to many disenfranchised souls who came to him seeking help or shelter. He never turned anyone who needed help away from his door and made many personal sacrifices to help others. His struggles with addiction were marked with his triumph over some of these demons and his continued quest to overcome and change a health system that he saw as having abandoned many caught up in the same trevails as himself.  He had a big heart and a generous nature, an unusually wry and often bizarre sense of humor, a love of nature and being surrounded by his good friends who he loved dearly. Rob was about to embark on a fresh start at his passing; he was looking forward to a new beginning and had many plans brewing in that brilliant mind of his, which makes this loss all the more tragic. Left to carry on without him are his mother Valerie Babin (Ain), father Robert Longpre, brother Andrew Babin, sister Laura Forneri, grandmother Gertie Balaski and numerous cousins, aunts and uncles in western Canada and cousins in Southern Ontario. Donations in Rob's name can be made to the Dew Drop Inn or to the Salvation Army soup van. A celebration of Robbie's life will be held on Sunday, October 16th at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 5 on Van Norman Street in the Club Room from 1:00 until 4:00 p.m. refreshments will be served and the bar will be open, which he would have liked. Come and share your stories and adventures with Rob with us; surely everyone who knew him has a few crazy tales to tell! The family would like to thank all of Rob's and our friends who were there to help us in our time of need: Ernie, Stephanie, Larry, Jay and Laura - we couldn't have done it all without you. Also many thanks to Dora, Janice, Dell and Holly who have helped so much with organizing the celebration. To those who sent cards, flowers, called or visited, your compassion and companionship at this time have been a great comfort to us as we try to navigate through these saddest of days.

‘You were born a child
of light's wonderful secret -
you return to the beauty
you have always been.'

I worked with Robbie at HGS call centre. I was nervous about taking on such a job and during training sat next to him. He was such a cool guy that my worries were quickly taken away. Very fond memories of this man.

We used to hang out in the mornings at the cafeteria tables when I had a spare period in highschool. He was always non judgmental, interested in what you had to say and easy to talk with. I still think of him as with his necklace and backwards baseball cap on. He will be missed.

Robbie had given me a place to stay during my hard times and it was my turn to return the treat. I was SO looking forward to having him as a new roommate. I'm completely crushed by his passing.

You were more of a brother than my own brother.

I will never not miss you comrade. You made my childhood days memories I cherish and will forever. I never thought of a world without you. I wish I could get one more day just to tell you that if there's a decent person in my being, it's because of the things I learned from you throughout our lives. I will never not miss you but I will take comfort in knowing you are at peace from the fight. Rest easy comrade.

I knew Robbie as a young teen. He was sweet, congenial and fun to be around. I saw the budding talent during those times I visited Thunder Bay. My condolences go out to you, Valerie, your family and friend and those friends of Robbie's also. Valerie
