D. EDGE Obituary

EDGE, Dr. D. Brian
August 21, 1941 – February 16, 2018
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Brian at his home south of Cochrane on his beloved ranch. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Pauline; his daughters & their families of whom he was so proud of, Laurie (Peter) Hughes of Cochrane, Linda (Robert) Berner of Assiniboia, Saskatchewan; the grandsons he treasured, Billy & Cole Hughes, McCoy and Cooper Berner; his sister Beryl (John) Sibbald, brother-in-law James (Charlotte) McIntosh and numerous nieces, nephew & cousins. He was predeceased by his parents David & Irene Edge and sister-in-law Jill McIntosh. Brian was a graduate of Olds Agriculture College and Guelph University, Ontario. Upon his graduation in Veterinary Medicine, he practiced large animal medicine in the Calgary area. Over time, with the assistance of wonderful partners & staff, they expanded to include clinics in Calgary, Cochrane & Crossfield. In 1968 he was a member of a team who started the first commercial bovine embryo transplantation called the Calgary Transplant Centre. Brian has served on the Large Animal Practice Committee for both the ABVMA and CVMA. Brian was a Veterinarian at the Calgary Stampede for 47 years and volunteered as a vet for the Calgary 4-H on Parade during those years. He was the vet for the Calgary Bull Sale for 45 years. Brian was a past Director on the Alberta Beef Producers as well as working with the Beef Cattle Research Council. He had been a Director with the Calgary Feeder Assoc. since the 1980s, Director with The Western Stockgrowers Assoc. and is one of the Veterinarians associated with the founding of the Western Drug Distribution Centre. In 1980 he returned to ranching & began downsizing his practice to one clinic in Cochrane. With the excellent assistance from employees and family, Brian has continued to ranch on the family land his grandfather homesteaded in 1887. He had a passion for all sports, especially football & in his younger days played football for a junior team in Calgary, the University of Guelph & was a co-founder of the Calgary Flag Football league. Brian has greatly enjoyed the Veterinary Profession and cattle ranching in Alberta. As per Brian's wishes a memorial will not be held. He wishes his many friends, family & clients to remember the wonderful times they spent together. A private family gathering will be held at a later date when Brian's ashes will be laid to rest on his beloved land looking towards the Rocky Mountains.
