Lynn Walford Obituary

Walford, Lynn Elizabeth (nee Forsyth): October 12, 1953, Quesnel, BC - March 31, 2024, Penticton, BC. It is with deepest sorrow that we announce Lynn's passing. She passed away peacefully after a short and courageous battle with cancer at Moog and Friends Hospice, Penticton BC., with her husband Tony and her daughter Julia by her side. The family wishes to thank the nurses and staff of Moog and Friends Hospice for their compassionate care of our Lynn. Lynn was predeceased by her parents Don Forsyth in 2020 and Margaret Forsyth in 2023. She is survived by her loving family, husband Tony, daughters Julia Chandler and Marianne (Justin) Stewart. Lynn had 3 grandchildren, Gabrielle Stewart (Caio Machado) and Ian & Edith Eichinger along with a great-grandchild, Leão (Machado). Lynn will be missed by her caring siblings Lori (Don) McFadden, Dave (Carrie) Forsyth, Al (Carolyn) Forsyth, and Jan (Val) Forsyth. In addition, there are many more extended family members and numerous friends in both the Edmonton and the Penticton areas. Lynn received her Bachelor of General Studies at Simon Fraser University in 1995. Then in 2002 she was conferred the degree of Master of Education in Administration of Postsecondary Education from the University of Alberta's Department of Educational Policy Studies. Lynn retired after 26 years in the Physics Department of the University of Alberta. Lynn loved being outdoors, where she undertook numerous activities, including biking, hiking, kayaking, and camping. You would often find Lynn and Tony having a picnic at Sun-Oka Provincial Park which is a favorite of many in the Okanagan. Lynn and Tony travelled extensively around the world, loved every activity, and cherished every memory of their journey. Lynn's relaxation was playing bridge, gardening, reading, yoga and watching sports with Tony. Lynn was a central part of the life of the Oasis Church community in Penticton. Her dedication and enthusiasm for so many aspects of the congregation's life together will be greatly missed. She was their voice of conscience, helping them to be involved in issues of justice, both locally and nationally. She served as the secretary for the church's Leadership Team and she was an essential part of many of the church's other activities. This including the "Green Up Group" (working with issues of environmental justice), the Anti-Racism Passion Cluster, the Bliss Fund Congregational Development Group and a group exploring the possibility of doing a social enterprise project. Lynn participated in every aspect of congregational life: worship, studies, discussion and social gatherings. They are so grateful that they had the chance to know her and be inspired by her. Lynn also regularly volunteered at the Soupateria and was an active member of the David Suzuki Foundation, the Sierra Club, and the Council of Canadians. She was often seen on the front lines of social activism, speaking out for those who could not speak for themselves. Lynn, you were loved by many and your life was not in vain. We will miss your spirit of living, your smile, and humour. A Celebration of Lynn's very active life will be held at the Oasis United Church, 2964 Skaha Lake Road, Penticton, B.C. on June 15th, 2024 at 1:00 PM. For those who are unable to attend in person the event will also be streamed live on Zoom (email [email protected] to obtain the Zoom link). In lieu of flowers donations can be made in Lynn's name to the Oasis United Church (https://oasisunitedchurch .org/donate/) or to a Charity of Your Choice.

Lynn was fully committed to bettering our world from small, private acts of kindness to large, coordinated organizational efforts. Her prime directive was to give. This sudden flickering out of the life of Lynn embodying hope and positive change is a loss for us all. She is also passing on the torch of involvement to us to carry forward in whatever manner we are able.

We were delighted to be in the Pachamama Alliance - Game Changer Intensive (GCI) study group with Lynn; she added something very special and was a real asset in all our group discussions. We took the GCI with Lynn almost three years ago and have gotten to know her through our small group meetings, which have been going on ever since.

As we came to know Lynn, we were inspired by the way she lived a committed life -actively supporting her community, working for justice and on behalf of planet earth. While she may have not considered herself a leader, we saw her as one. She led by example, rolling up her sleeves and getting to business, while being inclusive, remaining positive and determined, always with a `we can do this!´ attitude.

Lynn felt strongly about indigenous reconciliation in Canada and spoke passionately to our group on numerous occasions about their historic injustice. She gave us a glimpse into Indigenous life and relationships through her sharing about the initiatives she was involved in and groups she supported. Lynn shared her sorrow for the Kamloops residential school carrying the grief felt by the indigenous community at large.

Lynn also spoke of her desperation over old growth logging in British Columbia, her concern for BC´s watersheds, impacted by climate change as forest fires transform the landscape, forever changing communities impacted by fire. How she volunteered during fire season, helping evacuees forced to flee their homes, often with only the clothes on their backs.

She really had a beautiful spirit and it seemed like she shared that beautiful spirit in the way she went about her life - with love and enthusiasm. We were and remain deeply saddened by her passing and wish her family to know what a treasure she was to us and how much we will miss her.

Through the Pachamama Alliance and GCI we have had the great privilege to meet people from around the world who care about the planet, democracy, justice and our human family, and to learn together how to be more actively involved in bringing about a better world. We would never have known and been inspired by Lynn had we not participated in the Game Changer Intensive. It was a true pleasure to know Lynn and to share her passions, she will be remembered very fondly.

Lynn, you always showed up with a smile and positive energy for every event that was for social justice or climate action. Your generosity and kindness touched so many of us and made us better people. Thank you for always giving 110% of yourself to others.

Lynn just seemed to appear one day, full of enthusiasm for trees with an offer to support my Penticton Trees Urban Forest advocacy campaign. In the blink of an eye, Lynn jumped to get a drone in the air to document Penticton's tree canopy for presentations. She didn't slow down but became a pivotal Organizing Committee member to make our Neighbourhood grant funded Tree Social and Learning event happen last fall. Lynn was a bundle of focused energy, good will, warmth and desire to support a surprising number of community, health and environmental endeavours! She loved to chat and kept up her good spirits as she became ill. Thank you Lynn for being. Big hugs and heart full condolences to friends and family.
