Ardel Alexander Obituary

Ardel Alexander
(nee Thompson)

1943-2024

Ardel Alexander (nee Thompson) passed away peacefully with her husband by her side on February 14, 2024, in Calgary, Alberta, at the age of 80. Ardel was born on December 12, 1943, in Calgary Alberta.

Ardel was a remarkable woman known for her humor, warmth, and adventurous spirit. She had a passion for traveling with her loved ones, creating cherished memories along the way. Her husband, Dwayne, was her steadfast companion, always there to support her, even in the smallest of moments. Ardel found joy in exploring different cultures, with trips to Alaska and Rome holding special places in her heart.

In Houston, Texas, Ardel and Dwayne shared a beautiful home that she considered her sanctuary. She had a way with animals, coaxing their two feral cats to visit inside every night. Ardel was a gracious host, delighting in entertaining family and friends with her warm hospitality. When circumstances kept her in Calgary, she found comfort in the company of the Balbi side of the family, life long friends and her high school gang of spirited ladies.

Ardel will be deeply missed by her devoted husband, Dwayne Alexander, her daughters Twila, Tania, and Lendel, her stepson Dwight, and her grandchildren Miriam, Dawson, Abigail, Annika, Davanta, and Seth. She is preceded in death by her mother, Marian Wathen, and her father, Mervin Thompson.

A memorial service to celebrate Ardel's life will be held this spring in Prince George. Details of the service will be announced at a later date.

Ardel Alexander touched the lives of many with her kindness, humor, and love. She leaves behind a legacy of cherished memories and will forever hold a special place in the hearts of those who knew her.

We first met Ardel, in 1977, when we moved in behind their place in Prince George, BC. We were fairly newly married and the new parents of twins. Ardel became my rock, guardian angel and a wonderful friend as she helped me cope with the babies, which I am still grateful to her to this day. We also spent many hours playing hundreds of games of Yahtzee to pass the long evenings. We were transferred out of Prince George late in 1978 and subsequently lost contact of Ardel. Fortunately, in 2021, a mutual friend told us that Ardel was living in Calgary (we live in Bragg Creek) and we were able to reconnect. But no matter how many years had passed Ardel welcomed us back as if those years had never passed. But that was just Ardel and the wonderful person that she was. We were also privileged to have met and spent some time with her loving, soft-spoken, soul mate Dwayne. Even if our reunion was short lived, we will always hold those precious memories of our time together close to our hearts.

Ardel although we will miss you, we know that you are now in a much better place. That place is freeing you of pain, enabling you to breath freely and letting you enjoy that cup of tea with your dear Mother, Marian. Rest in peace, our dear friend.

To Ardel's family we extend our deepest and heartfelt sympathy and sincere condolences. May your many sweet, precious and happy memories of Ardel guide your through this journey of sorrow and know that she is now looking down at you with contentment and awaiting the time when we all can be reunited with her.

Our love to all, Sophie and Bobby

We first met Ardel, in 1977, when we moved in behind their place in Prince George BC. We were a fairly newly married couple and the new parents of twins. Ardel soon became my rock, guardian angel and a wonderful friend as she spent many hours helping me to cope with the new babies. For which I am truly thankful for. We also spent many hours playing hundreds of games of Yahtzee to pass the long evening hours. In 1978 we were transferred out of Prince George and eventually lost contact with Ardel. In 2021, fortunately through a mutual friend, we were notified that Ardel was living in Calgary (we are in Bragg Creek). So that's how we ended up reconnecting. But no matter how much time had passed, we easily fell back into our friendship as if it was only yesterday that we had just last seen each other. But that was just the way it was with Ardel. Once you were Ardel's friend you were her friend for life. That was also when we had the opportunity to meet and spend time with Dwayne, her loving, soft-spoken, soul mate. Even if our time together was short-lived, we will always cherish and hold those precious memories close to our hearts.

Ardel, although we will deeply miss you, we know that you are in a much better place. A place where you are free of pain, breathing freely and sipping tea with your dear Mom, Marian. Rest in peace dear friend.

To Ardel's family, we extend our deepest and heartfelt sympathy and our sincere condolences. May your many sweet and happy memories guide your journey through this time of sorrow.

Much love to all.

On behalf of the Alexander & King Family,
To our Brother & the Family of Ardel (Daughters & Grands..) - - We´re deeply sorry for the loss of Your Love One. Please accept our heartfelt condolences during this difficult time. May You find Peace, Strength & Comfort in the memories You´ve shared.
"ARDEL", You´re Gone but definitely not Forgotten. Your presence shall rest in our hearts! {Everlasting Joy shall Crown your Head. Pain & Sorrow shall be no more. Peacefully Rest in Paradise}.
My dear Sister-in-Law, I´m thankful for your friendship, your encouragement, your kindness & your warm embrace. Ardel & I enjoyed each other company. There were times when our trips to Texas would overlap, this would afford us the opportunity to have our in-person visits.
She loved her family, often spoke of her Mother, Daughters & Grandchildren. We had a spiritual connection & found joy in sharing our experiences.
To Dwayne, my (Brother), such a Kind Heart & Loving Spirit! I´m reminded of a gospel song, sung by Rev. James Cleveland, "Give Me My Flowers while I yet Live", so I can see the beauty that they bring. Speak kind words to me, while I can hear the comfort that they bring. Brother, I truly thank God for You! Thank you for being such a loving & devoted companion/husband. I too saw the love that You and Ardel "Sweetie" shared.
To the Bereaved: May God Love be a Light to illuminate your path.
"ARDEL", I bid You Farewell, until we meet again.. Cynthia (BD)

Ardel was a wonderful, caring friend. We shared many indepth conversations from family triumphs to tragedies, many with laughter, others with tears.

My first memory of Ardel was when we moved next door to her in Bowness, Alberta. It was 1954 and we were just kids and hit it off right away except for our tastes in music (lol). Ardel was a great person and wonderful friend - I shall miss her forever. Condolences to all her family.

My first memory of Ardel was meeting her on the way home from school. She was 12, I was 11. For 68 years, she was my heart sister and no matter how much time passed, the first thing I saw was that beautiful smile and next felt that warm enveloping hug. So many memories in between but the next great one was being invited to her haven, her home in Houston and meeting her lovely Dwayne.
So much laughter and joy and silliness which became the mantra of many lunches over the years with the high school quartet.
I shall miss you forever but always remember with you with a smile.

Pic #1 Donna/Ardel, Linda/Ardel 1961. Then Galveston with Ardel´s Sweetie 2008. Then my place, Calgary 2010 (if I´ve done this correctly)
Ardel was one of those special, old friends. Our different paths could keep us apart for years at times. Then we´d get together and pick up right where we´d left off as though we´d just seen each other the day before.
She had such a gift for pulling people together and for making friends feel special and we will truly miss her.
To you Dwayne, the love of her life, and to her girls and their families, I send my heartfelt sympathies.
Hugs to all, Donna

Ardel and I worked together in Continuing Ed for eight years. She was my aide, my side-kick, my rock. Her sense of humour, her empathy and her work ethic saw us through some long hours. She dealt with some pretty weird characters in a non-judgemental manner and I am sure she is remembered fondly by some who may have never known her name. We stayed friends to the end. She remained cheery and hopeful through some very tough health issues. I will miss her.

My first memory of Ardel was seeing her walk down the driveway to go to lunch. I looked at her for the first time and saw this sparkling woman walking as if she was also ready to take on the world. It was the start of enjoying many a lunch with her and this group of delightful women all with the same attitude. It was a company of gals all with different lives, challenges, loves, and dislikes sharing the joy of companionship. Miss you Ardel!!!!
