John SWALES Obituary
SWALES, John Alexander O'Leary (Larry) , M.D., F.R.C.S.(C)
Born in Midland, Ontario May 2, 1925 and died August 3, 1998. Larry's love and humour is cherished by his wife Irma Lee Bonner, his children John, Mary Lee, Janine (Stephen Jewkes), Brian, Julianne and his grandson Creighton O'Leary Jewkes. He is predeceased by his parents Rose Simnett and John J. Swales and his brother Carlyle (and Ruth) Swales. He is survived by his sisters and brothers-in-law; Elaine (and Theo) Bernard, Catherine (and Russell) Quick, Jacqueline (and Tom) Reedy and Arlafay (and Basel) Burtch. Larry graduated from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto in 1948. He completed his residency in Toronto and Halifax then studied in Europe on a Canadian Cancer Society J.S. MacEachern Memorial Fellowship. He began his practice at St. Michael's Hospital. In 1965 he moved to St. Joseph's Health Centre to become Chief, Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (1965-86), and later Chief of Staff (1970-80) and Associate Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, University of Toronto. He was dedicated to his profession. Larry was kind and gentle and blessed with a dry wit and wonderful sense of humour. He felt close to God in his garden and giving witness to new birth. The family will receive friends at the HUMPHREY FUNERAL HOME - A. W. MILES CHAPEL, 1403 Bayview Avenue (south of Eglinton Avenue East), on Tuesday, August 4 from 6:30-9:00 p.m. and Wednesday, August 5 from 2:00-4:00 p.m. and 6:30-9:00 p.m. FUNERAL MASS THURSDAY, AUGUST 6 -10:00 A.M. OUR LADY OF PERPETUAL HELP CHURCH (St. Clair Avenue and Mount Pleasant Road). In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to St. Joseph's Health Centre Foundation (OB/GYN), 30 The Queensway, Toronto M6R 1B5. The family wish to thank the doctors and staff of SJHC for their loving care and kindness.
