Robert Stephenson Obituary

Robert (Bob) Lee Stephenson The Commish 1939-2021 It is with great sadness that the family of Robert (Bob) Lee Stephenson announce his passing on May 14th 2021. Born on January 1st 1939 in Port Alberni BC, Bob joined the RCAF at 17 years old and served proudly for 33 years. As a member of the RCAF Bob saw much of the world and was recognized for his diligence and work ethic throughout his career. Robert retired from the military at CFS Baldy Hughes as a Warrant Officer and continued to serve his community as a member the BC Corp of Commissionaires. Having ascended to the highest rank possible as a Commissionaire (Chief Master Warrant Officer), and receiving the Queen's Diamond Jubilee medal Bob retired from the Commissionaires after 24 years. In all, Robert proudly spent 57 continuous years serving his country and community with distinction. Robert enjoyed hunting, fishing, and the occasional cold beer. Bob cut an imposing figure, looming over most of the population, and while he enjoyed pretending to be gruff and was occasionally downright ornery; those who knew Bob loved him for his charm, generosity, and humour. Predeceased by his son Lee, Robert is survived by his daughter Kimberly, wife Tina, step-daughter Raquel and step-son D'Arcy as well as numerous grandchildren, family and friends. Robert will be dearly missed and fondly remembered particularly for his words of wisdom: "It's not a speed thing, tomorrow is another day."

Bob was a boss of mine in my teens. I was hired by my neighbour Charlie Darter to be one of the security guards and clean up garbage at Charlie’s annual bluegrass festival at Francois Lake. Bob was the head of security. He was gruff and tough, but we junior labourers soon discovered that it was a front for a warm, smart, experienced and dedicated nice man.
I nearly fell over, many years later, when I got my journalism career underway in a new community, Prince George, and had to one day go to the RCMP station to interview someone. There was Bob!, the gatekeeper, still doing security for the people who needed it most, an authority among authorities. He remembered me as fast as I remembered him. Years went by and I certainly came up with excuses to go to North District headquarters just to get in a chat with Bob. I learned a lot from him, he was always gruff and tough, but he always let it shine through that this was just a professional facade. Sometimes he needed it, but usually it was a joking front with smiles and banter always at the ready. I liked him always. I will miss him fondly.

I worked with Bob at Carney Street for years while Bob was a commissionaire boss. He was always so nice even through some tough times at our office. He will be missed by many and I am grateful that I got to meet him... He made the world a better place. Sincere condolences to his family .

Very sorry to hear of Bobs passing. I served with Bob in CFS Baldy Hughes, B.C. He was always cheerful, friendly and military. We sucked back a few beers together and went fishing once or twice. When the station closed Bob stayed behind to teach the Mounties to behave. Very sorry for the families loss. Great guy, he will be missed.

Robert possessed the additional qualities of great patience and tolerance. Once in the boat,he was forced to endure many long, sometimes hot hours listening to repetitive tall tales about moose hunting, fishing trips gone array, and other mendacious fables.Robert seemed to enjoy these ventures as he would always grin and chuckle when he was asked for his opinions.Perhaps he found comfort in knowing that if we caught enough fish, avoided the storms, and found our back to main land he might get a fresh walleye supper and possibly a cool one.We {Teanies Bros.,sister and families}shared many good times fishing and boating on Lake of the Woods and countless other inland lakes with Robert. He possessed a good sense of humor and will be missed by all that knew him.

I so enjoyed Bob's humor. Always the grumpy straight man, until that little smile popped out, wrecking the image. I always enjoyed our chats. He will be missed.

My husband and I worked with Robert for many years on 5th Ave. He always took time to chat and we would have a good laugh. Robert was just so outgoing and mad our day brighter with his smile. He will be truly missed by many. Our thoughts and prayers to all family and friends.

Bob and I worked closely at the North District RCMP for many years. If Bob loved you, you knew it . . . We had many laughs over the years, but he was also always there when I needed a shoulder to cry on. He had the best Bob bear hugs! The North District front desk was never the same after you retired. This world will not be the same without you. Hugs to you, Tina.

Bob was an amazing man and the world was a better place because of him. Going into the North District RCMP building after Bob retired was never the same without him at the front desk to greet you. You were one in a million and will be so missed. Rest in peace "Uncle Bob".

Dear Tina and family, we are so very sad to hear of Bob's passing. For over the past year we sure missed not enjoying our "OJ" wing night with you, Bob and the rest of the "motley crew". Will always think of Bob when we see a newspaper stand.
Hugs, Wally and Susan
