Charlie GATT Obituary

GATT - On September 18, 2021, Charlie and Gail, passed away peacefully, with their daughter Andrea, and son Jason, by their side. They will forever remain in the hearts of their two granddaughters Thea and Harriet, their son-in-law Joe Mamo, their daughter-in-law Kristy and her son Calder. Charlie is survived by George and Julie, Paul and Carol, Victor and Jacqueline, Mary and Alex Rubel, Tony, Larry and Joan, Joe and Kim, Dave and Rhonda, John and Dana. Gail is survived by her sister Lynne and Allen Vincent. They will be sadly missed by their loving nieces, nephews, cousins, as well as their great friends.

Charlie is predeceased by his parents Rita (Ebejer) and Frank. Born in 1941, Valletta, Malta, Charlie came to Canada in 1950. He was a dedicated volunteer in his community. For 32 years, he was a proud Volunteer Firefighter. When Charlie first moved to Canada, he fell in love with the game of hockey. Outside his family home on West St. he played hockey with his new found friends. He eventually traded in the street for a sheet of ice and founded the Clay Pit Clippers. After nearly 40 years, the Clay Pit Clippers still endure. Off the ice, Charlie coached several minor league hockey teams. He was also a dedicated member of the Port Colborne Schooners Jr. B teams. Charlie was a fervent Montreal Canadians fan, a thorn in the side of his family and friends who were Toronto Maple Leaf fans, Charlie never let them forget who was the better team. He will always be remembered for being very proud of his family, and his heritage.

Gail (nee Mills), was predeceased by her parents, Gordon and Jessie. She was born in 1943, Port Colborne. She grew up on Erie St. surrounded by family and friends. When her father returned from the war, in 1946, he introduced his family to a whole new world. He built a small rustic cottage, on the shores of Lake Kawagama. Here Gail learned a new appreciation for nature and adventure. Gail graduated from Port Colborne High School in 1961, and found her true calling as a teacher. She spent 35 years teaching in the Elementary division for the Niagara Catholic District School Board. Gail worked tirelessly and enthusiastically to provide her students with a rich and fulfilling education. On many occasions Gail helped those students who were less fortunate by providing them with lunches and clothing. She fought for them when they needed it and her impact on those she taught will always be remembered. Gail was a proud member of the Port Colborne firefighters women's auxiliary for eight years. While raising her children, and teaching, Gail attended Brock University, graduating with a Bachelor's of art degree in 1991.

Gail and Charlie were proud members of the Port Colborne Legion, where they were often seen dancing on New Years Eve. They loved to travel and were able to visit Malta, the Netherlands, Italy, Arizona, Calgary, Florida and Pennsylvania.

Thanks to the staff at Bridges Community Health Centre, Dr. McMillan, Dr. Batey, and Dr. Gladman for your compassionate care. Special thanks to Diane, Melonie and Dr. Parrot, whose empathy in facilitating MAID, will always be remembered.

Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of life will take place at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, we encourage random acts of kindness, or donations to Spinal Cord Injury Ontario, or Dying with Dignity Canada.

Charlie and Gail were the most enduring and loving couple. I have had the honour of not only knowing but growing up with Charlie my entire life as he and my brother Bob were inseparable and he was just another of the Mirrlees Clan, often finding him at the dinner table just like one of us, he was always around for the Saturday night hockey games especially when it was Toronto and Montreal and would be cheering and teasing my Dad and Mom as who were the better of the two teams. Charlie loved my Mom's homemade meat pie and glazed sweet bread and he and Gail always stopped by on the holidays just as she would be pulling them out of the oven. There are so many wonderful memories, he was more than a family friend, he was a brother to us all.
Gail was a kind, thoughtful and caring lady who was always there if you needed anything, we went to our first exercise gym on King Street and would laugh through our entire workout especially the hip strap that would giggle every part of you. Gail was always very generous, she helped teach me how to drive and even loaned their car to me for my drivers examination which by the way was twice. She always had a smile and a kind word for everyone and loved her family with a passion.
Charlie and Gail will be missed by numerous people who knew them so well, but I take solace in knowing that they lived, loved and passed from this world together in peace as they chose, always together to the last breath with their cherished Jason and Andrea by their sides.
May God Bless them and their families. All our love LouAnne (Mirrlees) and Mike Dwyer
