Garry STEVENSON Obituary

Passed away peacefully on August 24, 2022, at Parkview Estates, Long Term Care, Stouffville, Ontario at the age of 82. Born in Niagara Falls, Garry was the loving son of Alec and Mary Stevenson, (deceased). Garry is survived by his three children, Marianne Stante (Mike), Johnny Stevenson (Sassa) and Janie Fitzpatrick (Scott). He will be lovingly remembered by his five adoring grandchildren Nigel and Moira Stevenson (Switzerland) and Lexi, Caroline, and Aidan Fitzpatrick (Whitby). He was also a very proud great-grandfather to Daisy James (Switzerland). Garry was an educator and a coach and his career with Niagara South Board of Education spanned more than 40 years, initially as a classroom teacher at Victoria Public School and Principal of six Niagara elementary schools before his retirement in 1994. Garry graduated from McMaster University in Hamilton. He also went on to receive his master's degree at Ontario Institute of Studies in Education, University of Toronto. He was an avid sports fan and remained loyal to the Chicago Black Hawks going back to his teens. The Buffalo Bills and the Jays were also high on his favourites list. College Basketball and the March Madness Tournament had a special spot in Garry's heart. Basketball was his passion. Garry, known by friends as Yencin was a proud Red Raider during his high school years at NFCVI. Sweet Georgia Brown always brought a smile to his face, and lots of fond memories. He played slo-pitch during the summer for several years. Garry was also a valued member of the MHL (Midnight Hockey League) as a young man. The family will receive friends at the H.L. Cudney Funeral Home, 241 West Main Street, Welland Ontario, on Tuesday, August 30, 2022, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. A Service of Celebration will be held in the Chapel at 1:30 p.m. followed by cremation. Internment in Woodlawn Cemetery will take place at a later date. As an expression of sympathy, donations to Make A Wish Canada would be appreciated by the family. To Janie and family. Please accept our sincere condolences. I always made sure to pop in to say hello and goodbye to him when I was visiting Dad. And if Dad was sleeping I'd go and have a quick chat with Garry. Dad would go and visit with him too. I'm happy they became friends. We lost Dad on the 29th. So now there are two special men up above watching over our families. Much love to Garry's family.

I worked with Garry at the Best Western in N.F., during the summer of 1969. He was a great mentor and was largely responsible for my career change into teaching. Sadly, we lost touch but that summer remains a great and happy memory. Sincere condolences to Garry´s family and loved ones.

Gary was a great guy with a big heart, warm smile and great sense of humour. I have many fond memories of him and always remember the guidance he provided me when I began my journey as an educator. He will be missed. Condolences to his children and his entire family.

I am indebted to Garry for having given me my first contract with the school board. I will never forget my days working for him as principal of Prince Philip School in Niagara Falls.
Garry loved kids, took good care of his staff and was a no nonsense kind of person. I had tremendous respect for him.
My heartfelt sympathy to his family. He will be missed.

Gary gave me my first job as a teacher for Niagara South. I owe him so much. He was ( and all of us at Fonthill Senior Public thought) the best principal anyone could ever have. He stood up for his staff. He was our hero. I had the pleasure and honour of working with him again at A. K. Wigg. Garry was the best principal I ever had. Thanks big guy!
