Zilda Avila Obituary

Zilda Maria Avila (Texeira Mendes) born in Portugal April 23, 1943 and immigrated to Canada in 1970 to begin a new life in the country she called home. Sadly on May 18, 2023 she passed away. Many years ago her and her Husband Tomas of 57 years started their own contracting business working together for over 35 years and meeting wonderful people along the way. Many often became good friends. She was very special to not only me, her son, but also people around her. Her smile and sense of humour was available to all. Even though she faced difficulties in the latter part of her life, she would not complain, but instead would take solace in helping people in the only way she could, by listening and sharing kind words. She taught me so much. From every chore in the house to how to use the tools to build one. I introduced her to two new loves in her life, first my wife and then her grandson, who was her everything. I was so jealous :) I will always be so proud to call her Mom. May her and my Dad be reunited, hold hands and love each other forever. She is predeceased by her husband Tomas and her sister Nielsa and survived by her son Tom, daughter in law Tracy, grandson Thomas, her brother and best friend Elmiro and his wife Margarida, brother in law Unelio and nephew Sergio. A private service will be held. If you would like to honour her, remember who she was and may that warm your heart and bring a smile to your face. A special thank you to all the people at Albright Manor in Beamsville who treated my Mom with the upmost kindness and respect and made her feel loved. Know that you all hold a place in my heart. Also to the staff at Grimsby Hospital that in her time of need gave her comfort.

It was with great sadness when we learnt that Zilda had passed away. We had known her and Thomas for over 40 years. They were a team and always positive and helpful. Zilda was kind, loving, hard working, and her faith kept her going in hard times before Tomas passed. Her smile was genuine . She loved children and her greatest joy was becoming a gramma; our young grandchildren loved visiting her. May she Rest In Peace with the love of her life, Tomas. Our prayers are with you « young Tom » as she called you, Tracy and « Thomas » her special gift from God.

Dear Tomas and family we are truly sorry for the last of your mom. She was wonderful who always show her kind to everyone. We one time lived in same apartment that was owned by Commisso's in Grimsby. There your mom always found a way to help. We will miss her as well.

Tomas and Zilda were like family to me. I lived across the street from them and my children just adored them. There are no finer people than those two and I miss them dearlly.
