Christopher STARR Obituary

CHRISTOPHER STARR left his physical body on October 17, 2018. He was 45. He is deeply loved by his family and we are devastated by his sudden death. He is survived by his three daughters, Lara, Ella and Logan; wife, Lee Anne, mother of his first born Meggz; siblings, Russell and Alida; mother and father, Donna and Michael; nephew and niece, Connor and Caitlin; and many more who adore him. Chris Starr was an inventor, natural athlete, and daredevil. He was an exceptional father, brother, son, husband, cousin, uncle and friend. He found peace in the mountains and on the water. He loved old school rap, metal, Zeppelin and The Beatles. He rescued animals and loved his doggie Opal. He was a writer and could fix anything. He liked mafia pasta, biker rings, tattoos, watches, the Muppets, The Beast Pt.2, and could make anyone laugh. There wasn't a water tank he didn't like to fix twice. He knew how to be there for others but also did whatever he wanted, whenever he wanted. He had a fascination with wild turkeys. He had a green thumb, could make any seed sprout, and was a fish whisperer - his strong Mohawk magic enabled him to catch bigger fish at 5 years of age than grown men. He was deeply connected to nature, liked cribbage, card games, car dancing, movies and driving. He was a rebel teacher for 18 years. Once when instructed that 'only the positive impacts of colonialism be taught', he put that portion of curriculum up on display so his students could see how slanted the education system is. He had a penchant for fresh kicks, crazy hair, boat rides, spending other people's money, BBQs, anything Star Wars, and movies. As a child he was obsessed with grasshoppers and frogs. He once battled 5 raccoons with a hot water gun in the dead of night and lost. He also had standoffs with bears and bragged about them. He was a fearless advocate for First Nations students, and a devoted teacher. Free spirit, Chris always showed up late, and tirelessly sided with the underdog. None of us could stay mad at him. We miss his laughter already, but energy can neither be created nor destroyed. There will be celebrations of life on November 17 (Innisfil), December 15 (Collingwood), February 23 (Calgary) and May 24 (Cognashene). I'm so sorry....

I went to Westgate Elementary school (and Elboya and Western) with Chris. At the age of 10 (he was 11) we rode the school bus together from Elbow Park everyday. We were the first to be picked up and the last to be dropped off. I was a year younger than him, but that didn't matter. He was always so sweet and willing to banter with me. I just received news of his passing and want to express my deepest condolences to his family. Chris was one of a kind - so damn cool, and so damn kind.

Mr. Starr was a wonderful teacher.
I was lucky enough to get to know him when I was in grade 7. He was always helpful and someone I could go to when I had a problem.
His passion for sports was one of the main reason I kept up playing volleyball through high school as well as through my college career.
My thoughts go out to his family and friends.

Chris was a great friend to me during some hard times in high school. When my parents split he looked after me and was always helpful. I looked up to him back then. He was an amazing athlete. Could do anything. He skied, played hockey and skateboarded on a different level than the rest. No matter how many times he tried though, he could never teach me how to ollie. We loved the same music and introduced each other to albums of all varieties. We all grew our hair long and made fimo bead necklaces.
I also had the good fortune of spending a couple of weeks on Starr Island in Georgian Bay at the age of 15. Made my way up from Toronto on the bus where Chris picked me up in the Boston Whaler. Had a wonderful time, with our other pal Geoff Plewes there as well. We spent hours in that boat. Either driving around looking for girls or parties, or knee boarding over the wake made from the ferries. We boat bailed and even went to a toga party in it. We met Eric Lindros there. He wasn't that interested in us.

We lost touch over the years, but a couple of years ago he reached out. We exchanged messages and made plans to meet up. I'm ever so sorry we never did that. Lots of love to his wife and children. And of course, Kinnie, Russ and the rest of the Starrs. He lived a life for many by the age of 18. So glad I got to be a part of that.
