Donald HEWSON Obituary
DONALD GLENN HEWSON November 2, 1933, Collingwood, Ontario to January 4, 2018, Stouffville, Ontario
It is with great sadness that we announce the unexpected but peaceful passing of a beloved husband, father, grandfather, relative and friend.
One of the first set of twins born at Collingwood Marine and General Hospital, 'Donny' would regale us with stories of trudging through the snow on his way to the one-room schoolhouse in Duntroon where he and his brother, Gary, got their academic and athletic start. When Duntroon wasn't big enough, Don ventured to the big city of Toronto where he scraped through Mechanical Engineering, enjoyed his fraternity brothers, played on numerous varsity teams, and most important, coached the women's ice hockey team where he met and soon-after married Sandra Weber.
An avid sports lover, watcher, coach and player, Don's athletic accomplishments showed themselves most strikingly in the game of golf. He started at the age of 16 in July at the Collingwood Golf Course and by September of that same year had broken 80. He was club champion at Scarborough and St. George's, won the York Downs Senior Championship 7 consecutive times, and won the Ontario Seniors Champion of Champions. He also had the great fortune to qualify for the US Senior Amateur on three occasions and was Past-President of both the Canadian Seniors' Golf Association as well as York Downs Golf and Country Club. In his retirement years, he reviewed courses around North America for Golf Digest, playing with Sandra, and some of his children and grandchildren. It was a great point of pride for him this summer when he shot his age - 83.
A detailed, articulate and organized businessman, Don was respected among peers, suppliers, and employees, first at Robert Muddiman Company, then, with partners Bill Reid and Tom Mostowy, as President of Romatec. Even in a tough year, Donny was known to dig into his own pockets to demonstrate his gratitude for his team's efforts.
He played hard, worked well, and loved easily. And it is that love that will carry us through as we draw on the many vivid memories we share of this remarkable man. Don was predeceased by his eldest brother, Frank; and twin brother, Gary. He leaves behind his immediate family, Sandra, his wife of 61 years; children, Kelly (Gord), Dana (Cindy), Carey, Brynn, Kyle, Brooke, Blake (Renee); grandchildren, Taylor, Brayden, Colby, Regan, Tanner, Tayte, Colton, Rory, Drewe, Kelsey, Brenna, Alyssa and Christianne; and numerous relations, friends, business associates, baseball teammates, and golf buddies.
Family, friends, and business associates are warmly welcomed to a celebration of Don's life at his 'second home', York Downs Golf and Country Club (4134 16th Avenue, Unionville, Ontario), on Thursday, January 11, 2018 from 2:00 to 5:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Donald Hewson may be made to the Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation.
