Dear Helen,
I'm afraid that I've only just seen this. I often think of Eugene and the conversations we had. It was a privilege to have known him and to have been able to introduce my children to him. He was a remarkable man who emerged from a terrible experience with equanimity.
My deepest condolences and best wishes to you,
John (Northamptonshire, UK)

Helen, please accept my deepest sympathy. May your grief help you grow and not wither. In spirit I celebrate the life and memory of the great person Eugene was. Andrew Szemeredy

I knew Eugene (and Helen) many years ago when we were all volunteers at Distress Centre 1 in Toronto. I'm sorry to have lost touch with them - I liked them enormously. My favourite memory of Eugene goes back to 1988 - in London, England. He was standing in front of the National Gallery hoping to spot Helen on her way to meet an old classmate for dinner. He realized she must have passed by some time earlier and was about to go for a solitary dinner when he saw me walk by. He called to me, we chatted a bit and then had a lovely dinner together at a pizza restaurant in Piccadilly Circus. It was so unexpected and fun to run into him far from Toronto. I was sorry to have missed Helen that afternoon - what an evening that would have been if the three of us had had dinner together! My condolences to Helen and their children and grands - and friends and colleagues.
