Gerald HILL Obituary

GERALD LAWRENCE HILL July 4, 1928 - March 9, 2022 With heavy hearts, we announce the loss of our beloved Gerry, peacefully at home, in his 94th year. He was a kind, loving husband to Joan (nee Sharpless) for over 69 years, and dear father to Richard Cameron Hill (Rick) and his wife Laurie of Brighton, Ontario, and Dr. Julie Vaughan Hill of Toronto. Proud Grandfather of George (Heather) of Warkworth, Edward (aka Ted) of Brighton, and Arthur (Sharilyn) of Kingston; and of his great-granddaughters Esme and Adelaide. Gerry was born and raised in Toronto, the son of Dr. Lawrence Hill and Gwenne Cameron Hill, and younger brother to Dr. Cameron Hill of Alberta. He attended University of Toronto Schools (UTS), class of '45. Entering for Grade 7, he was one of the youngest scholarship recipients, the only boy on stage still in short pants. He then attended Victoria College U of T for a degree in Maths and Physics. He played football for Vic. He also played bridge - a lot of bridge! - and continued playing duplicate bridge until nearly age 90. He worked at Canadian General Electric for a few years, then returned to OCE for his teaching degree. Hired by the Scarborough Board of Education to teach Math at Agincourt C.I., after 5 years he moved to the newly opened Sir John A. Macdonald C.I. as the Head of Mathematics for 25 years until his retirement in 1988. Gerry loved golf, summers in Muskoka at "Aftermath", March in St. Maarten, and their many overseas trips. His family have said their goodbyes, and cremation has taken place. For those who wish, donations in his memory may be made to The Scott Mission or the Toronto Humane Society.

Fondly recall math classes with Mr Hill at Agincourt CI in the early sixties......great and patient teacher, especially with math-challenged
Dummies like me.

Gerry and Joan were neighbours of my Mom, Lonie Butler, at their cottage in Muskoka. Gerry was such a lovely man and it was always a pleasure talking to him whenever we had the opportunity. Our deepest condolences to Joan on this very sad loss - you are in our prayers!

When Rick Hill and I were married, more than forty years ago, his good-hearted, down-to-earth, stable parents became family for me too.

Without ever telling us what to do, they have shown us worthwhile examples of what to do, at every stage. There was no drama with them, no crazy-making. There was always straightforward, kind and sensible behaviour. They showed up. They were there at every family event. They were generous. They helped, supported and shared with us and with our children. They demonstrated well-lived, faithful lives, happily enjoying the good things together, and bravely dealing with the hard things together.

I am grateful to have had Gerry Hill for my father-in-law. I think of him enjoying things. He enjoyed his boat and his cottage. Well on in life, he was still doing a nice shallow dive off the dock. He enjoyed his bridge buddies for decades. He played golf with his lifelong pal, Ed. He really enjoyed music, and remembered funny lyrics. He loved to travel, cheerfully driving in London, right from his first trip over. His intelligence and general knowledge were remarkable. You could ask him about something recent or arcane-how Romans did math with their numerals-or whatever, and rely on his careful explanation.

He was a gentleman: courteous, well and kindly spoken. The last time we saw him, near death, he still made an effort to be the friendly host. "You´re looking well," he said to Rick, and, to us both, "Welcome."

Gerry´s benevolent, patient and quiet presence will be sadly missed.
