Mary MCELROY Obituary

Mary Elizabeth McElroy
Mary Elizabeth McElroy (nee Hodge) Jan. 12, 1915 - Aug. 04, 2008 Mary passed away peacefully at the age of 93 at Amica Retirement Home, Markam, Ontario. She is survived by her two children: her son Ian (Cathy) and their daughters Tara and Kaitlin; and her daughter Anne (Dennis) and her children Nadia, Seth and Gina. She is also survived by her sister Anne Hodge as well as many nieces, nephews and their children. She is predeceased by her parents Agnes and John Hodge, her brother Ian and her dear husband James whom she cared for prior to his death in 1998.
Mary grew up in a family which valued education and she graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Classics from the University of Toronto where she excelled in her studies. As a child she spent many summers at Pike Bay and continued this love of the outdoors at North Star Resort with Jim and her children where she proved her skill as an avid fisherwoman. She was a keen reader and loved playing Duplicate Bridge, achieving her much prized Life Master Award after many years of study. She and Jim loved a good party with friends and made a fine dance couple! But, most of all, Mary was a gentle soul who loved her family, her home and was friendly and kind to those she met. She is sadly missed.
A private family gathering will take place to celebrate Mary's lifetime. Non family members may make a donation to a charity of their choice in Mary's honour.
