Patricia SEDGWICK Obituary

PATRICIA AILEEN SEDGWICK In her 89th year, our dear mom, Patricia Aileen Sedgwick, née Eckardt, passed peacefully on August 18, 2022. Born in Toronto on December 12, 1933, to Herbert Percival Eckardt and Aileen Cuthbertson Eckardt DaCosta. Predeceased by her husband of 50 years, Henry Francis (Hugh) Sedgwick. Extraordinary mother to Sarah Parry (Mark), Jeffrey Sedgwick (Robin), Naomi Schafler (Michael), and Joseph Sedgwick (Dimitra). Loving grandmother to Jessica, Olivia, Emily, Philip, Matthew, Emma, Persephone, Evy and their partners. There were plenty of stories of fun and mischief from her school days at BSS and Havergal, and her camp adventures at Glen Bernard and Gay Venture. Her true educational triumph came from earning an honours BA from Trinity College, Toronto. She will be missed by her many longtime friends from her childhood, high school, and university days. After their marriage in 1958, Pat and Hugh set up their home on Alexandra Blvd. to raise their family. Mom loved our winter weekends in Mulmur and summers in PEI. Wherever she was, the door was always open to one and all, and a seat was always found at the table. Although Dad would go to bed early, Mom never would leave while the party was still on! Being an only child whose father passed suddenly just before she was born, Mom felt her life mission was to keep our extended family together. Double digit gatherings included Thanksgiving, Easter, Christmas or whenever there was an excuse to get together. Mom was a true giver and through her we learned how to live a life of giving back. She selflessly engaged in charitable activities her entire life. A career volunteer and loyal champion for The United Way, Canadian Cancer Society, The Big Sisters of Metropolitan Toronto (Gay Venture Circle and the Thrift Shop), YouthLink, the CNIB, The Bishop's Company and countless other causes. Mom was very loyal to her associations and may hold the record for the longest standing member of the Granite Club and The Garden Club where she had many friends, both members and staff. Her volunteer contributions to John Ross Robertson PS and the Havergal Old Girls Association provided wonderful impact in our community. In more recent years, she thoroughly enjoyed social activities with friends at The Arts and Letters Club. St. Clement's Church, Toronto, and St. Luke's, Mulmur Parish, were special places that rounded out mom's spiritual side. We are extremely grateful for the loving attention our mom received from special caregivers in the last years of her life. More recently the staff and friends at Revera Leaside, the Spectrum care givers and the Temmy Latner team enabled mom to smile every day. A service of celebration will take place Wednesday, October 12 at 1:00 p.m. at St. Clement's Church, 70 St. Clements Avenue, Toronto, Ontario. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to YouthLink (youthlink.ca) or Temmy Latner Centre for Palliative Care (tlcpc.org) in honour of our mom. In the meantime, put on your best, fanciest hat and raise a martini on the rocks with an olive to help us celebrate a life well lived.

I expect Pat and Mary are dancing around the clouds in heaven having an outstanding time in the afterworld as they did on earth. Aunt Pat was truly remarkable - one of those rare unrelenting souls you could count on for a big laugh or a shoulder to cry on. She and Mom had so much fun and brought us all along for a great ride. Digging clams, farming oysters and bonfires on Cavendish Beach; running from cows (who actually weren´t moving) and hunting for puffballs in what I recall was a tree lined field´s edge; skiing in Collingwood; cottaging at the Falconer Mansion on Lake Vernon; fantastic meals at Mt. Ste. Anne and far too many times to count at the Granite Club. I remember when Pat and Mary tripped over a low-profile coffee table in the ballroom during a rerun of Gone with the Wind. As Rhett left Scarlet, they were howling with laughter because their shins still hurt. Pat could play many a part and showed up on Halloween as a ghoul or goblin to stir the caldron for a decade. It is simply impossible to listen to Cat Stevens without thinking of Pat and I told Roger Lightfoot about her and how we all knew the words to the Edmund Fitzgerald from when she played it reel-to-reel on Alexandra Blvd. So, I´m sorry I didn´t get to spend more time with you over the past decades but know that I love you and will never forget you. I´ll be thinking of you tomorrow at St. Clements and hope they play `O come all ye faithful'.
