Renee UNGER Obituary

RENÉE UNGER Peacefully, on July 3, 2021, with her three daughters having never left her side, Renée Unger passed from this physical life into her new spiritual life. Without question, our beautiful, brilliant, dynamic and spirited mother, Renée Unger, leaves behind many a legacy; her most significant being the greatest mother and grandmother and creating the infamous Renée's Gourmet Salad Dressings. Born December 11, 1942, Renée was the youngest child of Faye (Shankman) (z'l) and Albert Mendelson (z'l). Worlds Best Mother to Alysse (Andrew Luepann) Lori (Alan Gutmann) and Karen (Paul Burstein) and 'Best Bubs' to Ethan, Kaitlyn, Cole and Jamey Luepann, Noah, Layla and Zach Gutmann, and Jax, Jazzy, LJ and Emme Burstein. Sister to Marilyn Greenglass (z'l) and Edward Mendelson (z'l). Sadly missed by her best friend, cousin and 'sister' Irma Rotstein, and our father Arnie Unger, cofounder of Renée's Gourmet, with whom she always maintained a special relationship. After majoring in mathematics at the University of Toronto, Mom went on to receive her teaching degree. Already a fabulous cook, she used her extraordinary culinary skills to make all-natural salad dressings for family and friends in our home kitchen. In 1985, together with our dad, they created Renée's Gourmet Salad Dressings, which quickly became a family favourite in homes across Canada. Though she was a celebrity in the culinary world, she never forgot her roots. Always thinking of others, our mom was a 'humble and quiet' philanthropist. She taught us to always have empathy in others and to give with our hearts. All eleven of her grandchildren will forever remember her as the cutest, coziest and coolest Bubbie ever. She had a special place for each and every one of them, often talking stocks, cooking, fashion, books, Broadway, movies, music and sports. Our mother's passion for sports, especially for the Toronto Blue Jay's, tennis, football, basketball and hockey was passed on to each and every one of our kids. Without a doubt our mom left an impression on everyone with whom she ever came in contact. She will forever have a prominent place in our hearts and minds. She will continue to be an inspiration to us all. We love you Mommy with all our hearts. Our hearts are broken, but your love and legacy will live on - to infinity and beyond. Love, your 'three best dots' - Alysse, Lori and Karen

I first met her while meeting with Arnie at their home in early 1980. She was making dressings and sent me home with some. I was also involved with the addition to their building. What a wonderful person I found her to be. My sincere condolences.

Kindest lady I knew. Though indirect relative was family all the time. My heart to the girls and family. She was the rock of the family.

Alysse, Lori and Karen, the service was beautiful and your eulogies were amazing (nachos indeed!)
Your mom would be so proud each of you.
I have fond memories of the early years - building the business, the successes and the awards. 5 years of rapid growth, lessons and laughs! Renee was a great friend and business partner in the food industry.

In the early eighties, I worked with Rene at a large jewellery store, and I am certain she was as an accomplished saleslady as she was in everything else she did. She also had a gift for befriending people and a small group of us from the shop occasionally went out for lunch. I was an unlikely dining companion in my khakis and button down shirts, while she and the other ladies were always done up to the nines. Much later on, I came across an interview with her in a business journal and was most impressed to find out she was “that Rene”! During my time at the store she had mentioned she was getting her navigation credentials for power boats, so I wasn’t the least surprised that she had become an entrepreneur. Years later I read that she had sold the company, but I thought I would reach out to her through the “Ask Rene” contact on the dressing’s label on some off chance she was still answering queries, and to my delight she was still accessible through the usb port, and indeed did remember me. She invited me “and whoever” to join her for dinner sometime, but alas, several thousand miles separated us, and I never did make it back to TO to take her up on her offer. What a riot that would have been! I am proud to be able to say I knew the real Rene Gourmet. Gone too soon. My condolences to the family in this difficult time.

So very sorry to hear of your mother’s passing.
I met Renee in the ‘90s while promoting ingredients to her company. When she entered the meeting, we knew it - she was full of such gusto and energy and I was in awe of her success. She taught me invaluable lessons in that initial meeting alone that I carry with me to this day. I am forever grateful for having met her.
May she forever be in your hearts.

Dear Alysse, Lori and Karen

Reading with great sadness about Renee’s passing, I wanted to tell you how much I have admired your beautiful Mom.
Her sense of fair play, amazing business acumen and fabulous fashion sense will always stay with me.
Seeing Renee swooping in to my office in her green mink, fresh red rose tucked behind her ear, ready for a tough meeting with Dave... formidable! She won most rounds!

Rest easy, Renee!

Dear Alysse, Lori andKaren,
I am so sorry to hear of the passing of your mom. She was a beautiful, kind, generous woman and I only met her twice. I wantedto share a beautiful story about your mom. I met your mom at the Fancyfood show in San Franciscoin the early 2000's and I was a struggling food entrepreneurwith a tzatzikisauce I thoughtwas the best. No one wantedto talk to meabout it at the food show exceptyour mom. She had a huge Renee's salad dressingbooth and was surroundedby so many people. When I met her I was starstruck she was the entrepreneur everyone wanted to be. She was so kind, talked to me, gave me advice and as I left, she whispered in my ear.. she said something like this: "you are already a success - while others dream youare putting in the hard work". About 5 years later I met your mom again, this time at the Restaurantshow in Torontobut this time I was walking the show as the Minister of Consumer Services for the province of Ontario. I was surrounded by a team and walked the show talking to businesses...I turned the corner and there was yourmom. She recognized me immediately and came right up to me, hugged me and said how's the tzatziki sauce? We laughed so hard. That was your mom - a wonderful person with a huge generous heart who gave encouragementand confidence to so many. I feel blessed that I met her. My deepest sympathies to all the family.
