John VOORTMAN Obituary

Our dear father, grandfather, and great-grandfather passed away peacefully on May 10, 2021 at his home in Ancaster. John was born in Hellendoorn, the Netherlands, on January 27, 1928, and came to Canada in 1948. He went from his home in this world, to be welcomed to his new home by Jesus Christ, his Lord and Saviour, into the presence of God.
John was predeceased by his wife Ellie (van Barneveld) for 46 years, and his former wife Susan Soley (Tolsma). Father of Gerty (Arie) Hoogerbrugge, Walter (Jackie) Voortman, Jeanette Voortman, John (Marie) Voortman, Ozzie (Linda) Voortman, Johnny "Red" Voortman, David (Anna) Voortman, predeceased by Donald Voortman, Cynthia (Bonnie) Voortman, and Carl (Julie) Joosse. Also survived by 21 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. Dad was the brother of Bill (deceased), Johann (deceased), and his wife Aleida Voortman, and Harry and Ann Voortman. Dad will be remembered for his many years in real estate as John Voortman and Associates; Ellie and Dad founded Oakrun Farm Bakery, and the John and Ellie Voortman Charitable Foundation. John loved his dogs and shared that love. Dad loved practical jokes...and he would love to tease! He loved his family, extended family and friends. We will remember his smile!
We were blessed and grateful to Dads caregivers, and to Kelly Johnson, who was always available to help, which allowed him to live in his home. Thank you so much. Visitation will take place at DODSWORTH & BROWN, Ancaster Chapel, 378 Wilson Street East, Ancaster 905-648-3852 on Friday, May 14, 2021 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Due to Covid restrictions, please call to schedule a time to attend. Please join the family via Livestream for the service on Saturday, May 15 at 10 a.m. http://distantlink.com/dlm53.html, Password: Arbor2020. Interment to follow at Carluke Cemetery. If so desired, a donation to the Alzheimers Society would be appreciated by the family.

What wonderful hosts you and Ellie were in Marathon taking me fishing. I remember you teasing us and Ellie laughing out loud giving it away what you were up to. Thankful the world has people of your character giving to the less fortunate. Rest in Peace John.

Remembering Uncle John with fondness and a smile ❤. We spent many hours at Tante Ellie and Uncle Johns farm, bakery and house over the years growing up and later being welcomed back with my own family. He was such a unique and impactful man, on his family, the business world and his community. I was always in awe of his many interests and how fiercely he loved my dear Aunt! I send my love and condolences to the family and share in your grief of the loss of this amazing man. I am watching the beautiful ceremony along with all of you. I look forward to hugs and shared stories in person when time allows. Sent from my iPhone

Though he left us slowly, it is still painful. My condolences to his family and everyone else who knew and loved him.

Uncle John and I had a lot of common interests. We finished Lake Erie, and the Florida Keys together. We incubated and raised quails, pheasants, and peacocks during the same period of time. We both loved vegetable gardening and farm animals. It was never hard to get an opinion from him, and we sometimes disagreed. But it didn’t matter. He was my uncle and always my friend. Goodbye Uncle John, until we meet again.

Our sincere condolences on the loss of John. I worked at Oakrun for many years and both John and Ellie treated me like family. They always came by my office upon returning from Florida to ask how my family was and remembered them by name. I know that this was the case with the many employees in the office as well as the bakery. Many times John came by my office to make sure that I was doing ok if I was working late or during holiday times. He will be missed

He was one of the kindest men I have ever met - loved my little grandson when he saw him at the Christmas parties hosted by Oakrun Farm Bakery. Rest with Ellie in peace John.

Your dad and my late husband (John Smith) were good friends for many years. John used to drop off his Raisin bread every Christmas morning and he often provided our church with extra treats. In fact, he and Ellie gave us our Airedale because “ Niko needed a good home. “ I’ll remember them with love. God be with you all.
