Sylvia FRASER Obituary

Peacefully in hospital in Toronto on October 25, 2022, after a brief illness in her 88th year. Sylvia is survived by her nephews Nicholas, Anthony, and Michael, and by her nieces Susan and Patricia, and their families, as well as by her "adopted clan," Anna and Julian Porter and family. Sylvia was a compassionate ally to underdogs—animal and human—and a keen observer. She grew up in Hamilton, ON. After graduating from the University of Western Ontario with a B.A. in Philosophy, she began her career as a journalist with the Toronto Star and went on to write novels, autobiography, and non-fiction, as well as ghostwriting several books, helping others tell their stories. Sylvia modelled meaningful, vibrant living that didn't conform to expectations and aged fearlessly. Her literary archives have been willed to the Mills Memorial Library at McMaster University. A memorial service will be held at Cardinal Funeral Home, 366 Bathurst St., Toronto (416-603-1444), on Saturday, November 19 at 2 p.m. Sylvia requested memorial donations be made, if desired, to Annex Cat Rescue or Toronto Pig Save. I knew Sylvia only from her literary works, which were powerful in so many ways even in how she constructed her books. From her personal stories of forgiveness, redemption, and resilience I drew strength to face my own life situations that called for forgiveness, redemption, and above all resilience. I treasure the time she responded personally to a review of her book that I left on amazon, as if somehow we magically touched hands across the internet. Even though I never met her, I will miss her as if I lost a best friend. Belated condolences to all her friends and family.

My deepest condolences. I read her book My Fathers House when it was first published. At the same time under hypnosis
I was finding out about my Father. Several years ago a friend invited me to come to Hamilton, because Sylvia was giving a talk about her book. I forget the name of the building but I will never forget Sylvia . I gave her a few pages of my book to read ,which I hope some day will be published, she wrote back to me, still have her letter........what impressed her the most was a piece about a bunny flower, a dandelion in seed , she said it was simple with much meaning. I will cherish the letter, I only met her once but she impressed me , her strength and intelligence. I am so sorry to hear of her passing. I hope someday my book will be published , I was born in 1937 in England. Margaret Marsan

My sincere condolences to her family and friends. I didn't know Sylvia personally but read about her involvement with animal rights and think she sounded like a sweet and interesting person. Rest in peace, Sylvia.

Sylvia was a beacon: a writer, a feminist, an activist who never saw a barrier she couldn't break. Thankfully, we will always have her words. It's her life-enhancing smile and generous spirit I will miss.

The Sutter family sends condolences and best wishes. Mom (Dianne Sutter), a close friend from public school days in Hamilton, who passed about a year ago, was always proud of Sylvia's achievements. They always stayed in touch. Mom always particularly enjoyed the regular late summer gatherings with Sylvia and other "Group of Seven" friends from Hamilton. Here's a picture from the 1987 get together. In case it isn't obvious, that's Sylvia third from the left in bright red and flamboyant sunglasses.

Sylvia, we are really going to miss you here at The Summit. I enjoyed our chats over the years and looked forward to your insights on many of our `campus´ issues. I will remember your advice and council.
