Bonnie Tough Obituary

BONNIE TOUGH September 19, 1951 - May 6, 2011 Bonnie died peacefully at home on May 6, 2011 after a 22 month battle with brain cancer. Much loved life partner, best friend and spouse of Connie Reeve, loving sister to Iona Tough, Peter Tough and Jim Tough (Lee Fielding) and stepdaughter to Edward Penny, beloved sister-in-law of Nancy and Steve Petersen and Alan Reeve and Lee-Ann Turner and wonderful aunt to Diana, Lauren and David. We will all miss her more than words can say. Bonnie will also be greatly missed by her many cousins, countless friends and her colleagues throughout the legal profession, especially those at the law firm she founded with Kathryn Podrebarac in 2005. Bonnie graduated from Osgoode Hall Law School in 1976, clerked at the Supreme Court of Canada and obtained a Master of Laws from Oxford University. Bonnie practiced law for over 30 years, starting her career at Blake, Cassels & Graydon and ending it at Tough & Podrebarac. Bonnie also taught Insurance Law at Osgoode Hall Law School for several years and was a Bencher of the Law Society of Upper Canada from 2007 to 2011. In September 2010, Bonnie was recognized by her peers for her skill as a lawyer, her professionalism and collegiality when she received the Ontario Bar Association's Award for Excellence in Civil Litigation. She was recently honoured by the Law Society of Upper Canada, which bestowed an Honourary Doctor of Laws on Bonnie on April 20th, citing her skill as an advocate, her high ethical standards and her contribution to the legal profession. Throughout her professional career, she was a trusted and respected lawyer and a valued mentor to younger lawyers. Although she worked hard, Bonnie lived a balanced life, and made time for her family and friends. She and Connie loved to travel and also spent many happy weekends together at their farm near Rob Roy hiking, biking, entertaining friends and family and relaxing. Shortly after her 50th birthday, Bonnie took up running and, over the course of the next several years, ran four half-marathons. After undergoing radiation and chemotherapy in 2009, Bonnie was determined to and did walk the Niagara Half Marathon, leading a group of astonished friends to the finish. Bonnie was an exceptional person - brilliant, curious, fun, generous, fair and kind. Among other things, Bonnie will be remembered by all for her indomitable spirit, her enthusiasm for life, her quick wit and her infectious smile. We are grateful to Dr. James Perry for providing Bonnie with the best available treatment, and for the kindness and compassion he demonstrated at each monthly appointment. We hope that he and his research team will soon succeed in finding new treatments for the glioblastoma that took Bonnie from us far too soon. We also extend our thanks to the team from the Temmy Latner Centre for Palliative Care, who enabled us to keep Bonnie at home for the last weeks of her life. In lieu of flowers, donations in Bonnie's memory may be made to the Sunnybrook Foundation, www.sunnybrook.ca/foundation; or to the Temmy Latner Centre for Palliative Care, www.tlcpc.org. In memoriam, donations made to Sunnybrook will be allocated to the Crolla Chair in Brain Tumour Research. A celebration of Bonnie's life will be held on Monday, May 16, 2011 at 3 p.m. at Koerner Hall at 273 Bloor Street West, Toronto, reception following. So sorry to hear of Bonnie's passing away. A moment in time: I taught her and her friends in grade 8 at Roman Avenue Public School in Elliot Lake....We forged together an amazing girl's softball team - everyone was so keen...we won the penant that year. Bonnie was a very bright young lady. She will be missed.

In the short time of knowing Bonnie, I found her enthusiasm and love of life infectious, and was so impressed by her keen listening ear and interest in people and the world around her. My heart is with you, Connie. I am sorry for your loss; may love hold and sustain you.

I was really saddened to hear of Bonnie's passing. We never kept in touch after high school. It wasn't too long ago that I joined Facebook and thought of looking her up. I have very fond memories of times we shared in grade school and high school. She always had a smile for everyone and I can certainly see how she became so successful. My heartfelt sympathy goes out to Connie and her family. May your wonderful memories help you through this most difficult time.

Bonnie was a very special lady. When I worked in the insurance industry, she was our lawyer, first at Blakes and then on her own. Her explanations of complex issues were superb, her humour infectious and, as I learned when I understood her work better, her caring nature a gift to all who knew her.

She encouraged my decision to return to school to study law and supported me with her wisdom and wit.

My condolences to all her family and friends. Her death is a great loss.

Please accept my heartfelt condolences for your loss. The few times that I have been in the presence of Connie and Bonnie; I was struck by the energy that radiated between them of much love and respect. They felt like one person instead of two. She has not left you; she has transformed; and you will be strengthened still by her love.

Like many, many law students over the years I enountered Bonnie for the first time when I was hired for a summer at Blakes, back in the late 80s. She was a kind, friendly and sympathetic person and clearly enjoyed her role as a member of the student committee. My heartfelt sympathies to her family, and to her many friends and admirers.

Attended Elliot Lake Secondary School with Bonnie and her sister Iona and her brothers Peter and Jim. Her smile never faded. And to read of her accomplishments makes us proud to remember her as the special person she was. Our thoughts are with her family. Paul and Lawrence Melis

I am very deeply saddened to hear of Bonnie's passing. I have thought of her many times over the years and truly regret not getting back in touch. Bonnie was my best friend in our per-teen and early teen years in Elliot Lake and our 'adventures' during those years still provide some of the fondest memories of my youth. I truly admired her zest for life. I can only imagine what a terrific life partner she must have been! My condolences to Connie and all the family. May you find many wonderful memories to cheer your heart as you celebrate Bonnie's life.

I worked as Bonnie's assistant for 12 years and was never able to find a replacement "boss" after she left Blakes. She was a wonderful person who taught me many skills and was very kind to me and my late husband (Michael) for which I am grateful. Bonnie was the smartest person I knew but was down to earth and we had many laughs along the way. Gone too soon and she will be missed by a lot of friends. My condolences to Connie and all the family.
