CHAITANYA KALEVAR Obituary

KALEVAR, CHAITANYA K. "CHAI" April 16, 1942 - February 11, 2022 Chai's smile, laugh, and energy often took over a room, which is how we will remember him. Chai is survived by his two sons, Sanjiv and Prem and wife Priscila, who will miss his spark, his dedication and passion for his beliefs, and a heart of gold that many did not see. Chai arrived in Canada in 1965, and lived a full life that spanned athletics (swimming, diving and tennis), four degrees (including three master's), global activism (Brazil, the Hague, Spain, and more), dance, regular political candidacy and poetry slams. In honor of Chai, we are including an excerpt from his original and most notable poem below. Chai's dream was to spread his vision for sustainability far and wide, so we know he will smile upon your reading this: Just One World: Commandments of Global Survival Just one world... Let us not blow it. Just one icecap... Let us not flow it. Just one globe... Let us not glow it. Just one family... Let us not fight. Just one race... Let us not discriminate. Just one chance... Let us not miss it. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Science for Peace based in Toronto. A 1-hour public visitation will be held on Saturday, February 19th at 9 a.m. at Jerrett Funeral Home (1141 St. Clair Avenue West). All are welcome.

My condolences to family and friends. I'm an activist friend of Chai's and we will miss his passionate energy for a better world, his creative messaging, beaming smile with his t-shirts, and his serious message that we need to stand up and make change. He was one of a kind, dedicated, a messenger from the world we could create if we all worked as hard as Chai did to bring the needed changes to reality.

We were so shocked, and deeply saddened, to learn that Chai - of the huge passion, energy and presence! - had passed away. His dedication to his mission - of warning against the dangers of rapacious human activity -seemingly kept him young (he did not look his age!). Our paths crossed at many events, including at Noor Cultural Centre (my organisation). Rest in peace and power, Chai! We will always remember you with affection and with gratitude for your important work.

Chai will be remembered by members of Fair Vote Canada for his unswerving support to make every vote count. His determination and dedication will be missed by his colleagues in this and other social justice causes he supported.

Chai was a constant on the progressive scene. He did speak his mind, and he made sure we all heard him! I think of him fondly, and his absence will be felt for a long time.
