Donna Lamping Obituary

DONNA LOUISE LAMPING, Ph.D. With heavy hearts we announce Dear Donna's peaceful death in London, UK on Wednesday, June 8, 2011 beloved wife of Itesh Sachdev, daughter of Helen Aiello Lamping and the late Vincent Lamping, sister to Gina Brennan (Mike), predeceased by her brother Tony (Kelly). Cherished aunt to Monique, Colin, John Luke, Connor, Calvin, nieces and nephews in the Sachdev family and loved by many Aiello, Lamping and Bell cousins, aunts and uncles. Donna was born in Willowdale in 1953, went to Loretto Abbey, University of Waterloo and Harvard University. She taught at Harvard, McMaster, Fordham and McGill Universities, before moving to a faculty position in England in 1992 at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, University of London. She had just married Itesh in a Tibetan Buddhist ceremony on the "roof of the world" - Nepal - in December 1991. Donna mentored many doctoral students, conducted research on health issues and was a regular presenter at international conferences. An active member of the International Society for Quality of Life Research, she was President in 2007-2008. Donna loved to travel, switching easily from one language and culture to another. She was a beautiful, vivacious woman enjoying life to the full with great food, good company and conversation and, always, enquiring about what others were doing. She knew and accepted her future once advanced stage colon cancer was diagnosed last fall and maintained her joie de vivre. She embraced many spiritual philosophies that guided her and Itesh as they prepared for her spiritual transition. She was elegant to the end. The funeral was held in London, UK. A Memorial Mass will be held on Thursday, June 23, 2011 at St. Gabriel's Church, (650 Sheppard Avenue East, Toronto) at 1:00 p.m. Ever the scientist, Donna wished donations be directed to research and treatment of cancer and/or a hospice for the care of those who are terminally ill.

In Memory

Donna Louise Lamping

The brilliant star,
shooting through the dark sky
leaves in her wake
a sparkle of memories,
like bubbles in champagne.

She is off into some other space,
a new existence expecting her touch,
waiting for her voice, her movements,
her fragrance, her face.

And then, she is there.

We wait behind expecting her touch,
her voice, her fragrance, her face
but now, they are gone.

Yet the sparkles remain,
each a delightful reminiscence
full of beauty, color, fragrance,
movement, love and joy,
tender companions to so many lives.

She departs,
but we share in the wonder
of that shooting star,
happy to be part of a life
so well spent.
Joyful in our thoughts of her.

Thank you,
Thank you for so much, my dear.

We saw Donna each summer vacationing at the Sandbanks. It was always a high point to see her, as she and Itesh would share amazing stories, food and drink from their travels. We felt privileged to know Donna, and always wanted to see and learn more from her. She has left us way too soon, but then, that was always the case each time we saw her! She will be hugely missed by us and by the world!

We all loved Donna when she was here at McMaster, she was a fun and loving person, so easy to work for and enjoyed her company very much, my heart goes out to you Itesh, because again, I also remember you. At least you know Donna is at peace now and not suffering anymore.

I cannot believe Donna is not in this world anymore. I cannot believe I won't see her again or hear her voice. But her bright star will continue to shine in the hearts and minds of all those she touched in her life. And she touched many with her warmth, energy, friendship, hospitality, worldliness, humor and love. I am heartened by the knowledge that Donna's spirituality carried her peacefully to her destination. She was always prepared for everything with equanimity and clarity of mind. May you rest in peace, dear dear Donna. You were deeply loved and cherished.
