JAMES HARTFORD Obituary

HARTFORD, JAMES 1954 - 2021 Passed away suddenly, on November 11th. He deeply touched the people in so many communities he was involved in. We are humbled by the outpouring of support and help from all. Jim is survived by his wife, Lynn Stein, his parents, Betty and Leo Hartford, brother Paul (Lisa), sisters Anne (Tom), and Patricia (Larry), aunts and uncles, countless cousins, nephews, and nieces. Jim has loved The County since he was a little boy at the family cottage in Northport. As a young man, he and his parents worked together in their sign installation and manufacturing business in Toronto. Lynn joined the company in 1979. Jim and Lynn's real estate career began in 1991, in The Beaches in Toronto. A year of sailing their boat south led them, and Betty and Leo, all to come back to the place they loved…The County, settling on Big Island in 2005. So many adventures. He Iived life to the full. The Big Island farm has been so wonderful. He and his dad worked together to fix the house, and barn and lands. Betty made beautiful gardens. Soon came dogs and cats, horses, donkeys, geese, ducks and chickens. Jim loved the farm life, the animals, building things, this community and the amazing neighbours and friends. His great pride was our company, Hartford and Stein Group and building an amazing young team. He felt like they were his children and he was so proud of their success. There will be an informal celebration of life on December 4th, at the Sophiasburgh Town Hall, 2771 Prince Edward County Rd. 5, Demorestville, Prince Edward County, ON K0K 1W0, from Noon to 3 p.m. There will be the opportunity to speak if you wish. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Sandy Pines Wildlife Centre in Napanee, or any charity of your choice.

I played many doubles tennis games with Jim. He was always a very good opponent or partner. He had a wicked serve that broke towards the Railing for the wheelchair ramp. He was the guiding force for that happy tennis group who all played on the horrible court in the Loyalist Dome. I miss Jim, he was part of the tennis community and was very welcoming to a newcomer from Toronto.

Jim and I were in grade 10 together in the same class. He was probably my closest friend in High School. I invited Jim to our cottage many years ago. I was saddened to hear he passed away.

Jim helped me buy 37 Ferguson in Picton. I still remember crawling into the low ceiling basement...and him saying to 6'2" me..."Lisa...its perfect for you!!"

Jim was a great doubles tennis player. He had a knack for kicking the ad court serve into the wheelchair ramp in the loyalist dome. I will miss Jim but not the wheelchair ramp rail that loomed large. Always laughing.

Dear Lynn, I would like to extend my deepest sympathies to the loss of your dear Jim. He was way too young! I remember you both very fondly, as my 'bosses', but also as mentors who taught me a lot about business. I worked for you at Charlesign for only a short time, but your's and Jim's memories have a warm place in my heart. As my 'sales manager' you showed me a strong woman of business with determination and sincerity in working kindly with co-workers and clients. I fondly remember Jim's sense of humour, ambition and team spirit.
I read in the obituary that you moved on to Picton County and it sounds like you have had a very rewarding next phase of your lives. I wish that your grief brings you memories of joy in the years to come.
