JOAN SCHMIDT Obituary

SCHMIDT, JOAN ANN (nee YATES) April 24, 1947 - December 11, 2022 Wife, mother, teacher. Joan Ann Yates, born in 1947 in Newcastle-Under-Lyme, England, immigrated with her family at age nine to Scarborough. Joan was a studious youngster, and after high school she attended St. Michael's College at University of Toronto. There she met lifelong friends, obtained a literature degree and worked the switchboard at Loretto College, where she met the love of her life, Ted Schmidt. After Ted and Joan married in 1969, Joan studied to become a teacher, eventually specializing in early childhood education. Joan taught first at St. Paul's School and in spare hours copy edited the Catholic New Times newspaper, then housed on the school's third floor. From the early '80s, Joan taught at St. John's School. After her 2013 retirement, she rejoiced in being a grandmother and bumping into former students and their families in and around the Birchcliff Village neighbourhood in Scarborough, where she and Ted lived for almost 50 years. Joan engaged the world and solved problems with an ethos of detail-oriented inquisitiveness, determination and humour handed down by her late mother, Joyce Tunstall. She will be missed by many who celebrated life with her and relied on her open door and heart over many decades, including her husband, Ted; daughters, Eileen Mitchell (Reid), Susannah Schmidt (Ryan) and Christiane Schmidt; grandchildren, John, Doug and Molly Mitchell, and Joe and Hugh Schmidt-George; siblings, Bob Yates (Betty), the late Sandra Kruse, Jill Woodman (Mike); brothers and sisters-in-law, Don Schmidt (Carol), Larry Schmidt (Brigitte), Philip Schmidt, and Paul Schmidt (Sherry); and many beloved nieces and nephews. Joan's death was like her beautiful life, grace-filled until the end as she was sacramentally embraced by all five grandchildren; each last supper fed by her daughters was eucharistic, given and received with thanks. Joan's family extends gratitude to and for medical professionals and the palliative care team at Michael Garron Hospital, especially second-floor nurses, who accompanied Joan and family with dignified and holistic care. In lieu of flowers, please send letters to your MPP and the Ontario government advocating raising nurses' wages and demanding adequate investment in public health care. Wake will be held Monday, December 19, 2022, at McDougall & Brown Funeral Home, 2900 Kingston Rd., Scarborough, 5 - 9 p.m. Funeral Mass followed by a reception on Tuesday, December 20, 2022, at 11 a.m. at St. John's Catholic Church, 794 Kingston Rd., Toronto.

I've just heard the news and my heart is overwhelmed. Mrs. Schmidt, you were my first & favourite teacher.

I was a student in your first class at St. John's. As an immigrant family, everything was new (including English) and you offered nothing but pure love. What an incredible live you have lived, and you had such a profound impact on my life and love of learning as I am a teacher or sorts now, too. Years ago, I missed your retirement party during my time overseas & now sadly missed attending your funeral. I always hoped we would run into one another during my visits back home.

There are no words to express how much gratitude I have for you & your family. I wish you good rest. I wish your family peace knowing your life left such a lasting impact on so many children and families. I will plant a tree in your honour next Spring, and continue to share stories of how important and impactful you were in my life.

Condolences, Blessings, Peace, Hope and Love to all this holiday season, especially those who will miss her the most.

Sincerely,
Dr. Catherine Febria Oabel

I will always remember Joan and Ted sneaking into St. Michael's Hospital after-hours to support me when our daughter Sarah was born with some complications. Their irrepressible glee at sneaking and the kindness that they both showed were such a big part of who they were.
We will miss Joan's joyful spirit.
Our deepest sympathies to Ted, Eileen, Susannah & Christianne

As known and awareness confirm our connection as one, with and in one, we experience together this shift.

It is our being of Love that allows space for this light of such a Soul to forever shine within each of our hearts.

Never to fade or flicker whilst it grows ever stronger through Truth, Faith and Love of self and the many thousand things.

I was Blessed to have had cross my Path the likes of Mr. Schmidt while attending Neil McNeil and having been a student of St. John´s the connection resonates brightly.

Love over Fear
Light over Darkness

Never are we nearer the Light than when the darkness is deepest

Be Well
Live with purpose
Shine Brightly

Know you are never alone but rather Part of a Beautiful Whole

Joan was our sister and good friend. Two of our children had the good fortune to have Joan as their grade 1 teacher. There could be no better way to begin their education quest, with the positive and encouraging love through lessons and creative projects. Now we express our profound gratitude for we know that so many children began their educational trek with confidence and fervor because of Joan. Her star burns bright in the heavens.

I met Joan a few years ago when she was a member of a local women's choir - Shout Sisters. We both sang in the soprano section, so we stood side by side during many practices and performances, helping each other find the right key, and trying not to giggle when we missed the mark! Additionally, her grandson, John, played hockey with my son (Lee Neff) on Ted Reeve Thunder, so we would sometimes see her at games where she would proudly cheer from the stands. Sending my thoughts and strength to her family during this difficult time.

We are just hauling out our Christmas ornaments to hang on our tree and there were the lovely angels, that my older two kids made in Joan's class, when they were at St. John's School in Grade 4, still intact and ready to be hung up like we have done every year since they made them. They are treasured ornaments.

Joan instilled a love of reading and writing in both of our older two children (and penmanship too!). She was also a strong (and maybe early) proponent of "journalling" telling the kids to journal their feelings throughout the day (instead of being mean to each other or pushing each other around). Our daughter still has her illustrated journals from her time in Joan's class. And who can forget the dances she taught them - anyone remember the eagle pose? She was a special teacher and imparted much to her students including a wonder for the world and, of course, compassion for others. I often used to run into Joan in other places - she was a fixture in the peace and justice movement - and I would gravitate to her when I saw her in the crowd. She was a really special person. We offer the family our deepest condolences. Anne-Marie Tynan & Peter Petrasek.

She was my first grade teacher, and the last time I saw her (which was almost 20 years after she had taught me) she still remembered me and the entire class and could still tell stories about us. 20 years after the fact and she still remembered the kids that she taught back in 1989. A wonderful woman and a fantastic teacher. I am grateful that I was lucky enough to have been one of the many children that she taught during her long teaching career.
She will be missed.

Dear Ted, Eileen, Susannah, and Christiane,
The news of your great loss came as quite a shock; Joan's personal strength and vitality seemed to guarantee us the joy of her presence for decades more. While we know that Fintan in heaven is delighting in welcoming Joan, here in Albuquerque Siobhan joins me sending you our deepest condolences and prayers, as do Ciara and her family in Whitby. Joan was a lovely gift in our lives, and we mourn with you.

I recall Joan being kind, generous, and striving for peace and justice. I met Joan and Ted through their daughter Susannah, whom I befriended when we were both part of the Student Christian Movement. I saw how Susannah got her passion for justice from her parents.

Ted, and the rest of the family, are in my prayers, and in the prayers of my wife Heather. Advocating for a better world is a fitting memorial for this wonderful woman.
