We will always cherish the memories of his visits to Kimberley and the 'get togethers' we had where we would sing the Perseverance School Song and the 'War Cries' of the different schools that were chanted at the Sports day on the 24 May each year at the De Beers Stadium. Mr. John Kester
One of the finest men that I have ever known. May you rest in peace sir.
The influence that you and your lovely wife Chris had upon me as a child shall never subside. The kindness that you and your extended family showed as you took care of us at lunch and after school will never be forgotten.

The Loquat Tree

Uncle John was like a force of nature, he could not and would not be ignored. As kids we knew that! On this morning he flew out of the kitchen to see what the hens in the fowl run were making such a noise about. The children scattered as he yelled at us for disturbing the hens and the neighbourhood. Victor took off to help Eddie fix a bicycle, Ralph was safely away helping paint a roof,Jean and I climbed the loquat tree, and Patricia and Rosemary settled down under the tree to play a complicated game of "Shop". Uncle John reappeared, still shouting, checking that we were occupied and quiet, but went quickly back into the house as the oven door clanged and the delicious smell of currant slice was wafted though the passage and into the garden. "If you are all very good Aunty Pete may be persuaded to give you some, he called over his shoulder."
After the tongue lashing earlier he'd softened the harsh words (with a lot of help from Aunty Pete) with the promise of morning tea!.

Uncle John and Aunty Chris (Petey) were very important to the du Plooy children. They influenced our attitudes to thrift, to learning and started a life-long appreciation of classical music. Uncle John was larger than life, vociferous and sometimes really frightening, but he taught us about taking responsibility for our actions, and to try our very, very best to achieve success.

As I was very young when the Kesters emigrated to Canada, I was fortunate to spend time with both Uncle John & Aunty Pietie when they visited Australia some 15 years ago. Sadly the last but richer for the memories. Uncle john, you will always be remembered for your powerfull personality and historical knowledge.
Our condolences extend to the entire family.

Good next-door neighbours are hard to find. Chris and John Kester, and their children, certainly fit all the criteria when they lived at 202 Wellesworth Drive, Etobicoke. I am sure they both contributed to laying a good foundation for Don and Sue to later pursue higher education. Even John's real estate expertise steered me through our move from Etobicoke in 1990. He was a true role model.
