MICHAEL LAVOIE Obituary

MICHAEL "LAV" LAVOIE Michael Peter Lavoie of Toronto, ON, and Fort William, QC. Suddenly in Ottawa on April 20, 2014 at the age of 71. Beloved husband and partner of Michelle Metivier, loving father of Paul and Christopher, and grandfather of Emma Hitsman-Lavoie and Johnny Lavoie. Predeceased by parents Francis Xavier and Jean Lavoie (nee Hamilton) and by his first wife Myra Lavoie (nee McCool). Mike grew up in Pembroke, ON, and lived much of his life in Ottawa and Toronto, and loved summers at the cottage in Fort William, QC. Mike will be fondly remembered by all who knew him, including his siblings David (Miriam) and Charlie (Erin) both of Ottawa, Susan Leblanc (Bernard) of British Columbia, Joanne McLean (Terry) of Ottawa, brother-in-law Nicholas Metivier (Ingrid) of Toronto, the Giroux girls and many nieces, nephews and friends. His wicked sense of humour and discerning wit will be greatly missed. Mike was a brilliant writer and an award winning journalist, who started out with the Pembroke Observer and went on to work for The Windsor Star, the Edmonton Journal and the Toronto Star before moving to television with the CBC's The Fifth Estate and then CTV's W5. He was an active journalist up to his death. Family and friends are invited to join for a mass on Friday, April 25th at 1:00 p.m. at St. Augustine's Catholic Church (1060 Baseline Road), Ottawa, followed by a Tribute to Mike at Cedarhill Golf and Country Club (56 Cedarview Drive), Ottawa, between 2:00 - 5:00 p.m. Donations to the Ottawa Heart Institute would be greatly appreciated.

I am an old friend from Mike's Edmonton Journal days and I have just learned of his death. I have never laughed so hard or as much as I did with Mike. He was so clever and so witty, with an uncanny knack for cutting through the crap. My condolences to his family.

Lav was one of a kind . The very best. He had a wicked wit and was sensitive, humble and kind. This is such a sad day for everyone who knew him and loved him. My deepest sympathy to Michelle, Paul, Chris, his grandchildren and the Lavoie family from Pembroke days. Having Lav as a friend since our days at the CYO in Pembroke was a personal blessing.

Very sad indeed! Mike was the alter ego of Eric Malling (who has also left us)at W5 during the 1980s. They produced some great programs together, programs that dealt with public issues and triggered much debate. Mike was a skilled and dedicated professional. Condolences to Michelle and the family.

Mike combined the valuable qualities of patience, compassion and competence. No one was better at coming into an editing room heavy with lawyers and editorial argument, and coaxing a sensitive, complex piece of journalism towards a fair resolution. A wonderful man. Mike's family owned a treasure. His was a fine life to remember. That lives on, staying with us all.

I worked with Mike at W5 and loved the big guy. It was always amazing to see how he could come up with a simple turn of phrase to make a script sing. At Agincourt, his office was the unit's unofficial (and totally frowned upon) smoking room where ideas would be hashed out in low level cloud. His big truck took up two spaces in the parking lot. And his typewriter back in those days banged louder than anyone's. He was a character for sure, with a big heart and a big talent. I'm so sorry to hear of his passing and extend heartfelt condolences to Michelle and his family.

In over 40 years as a cameraman for CBC's This Hour Has Seven Days and CTV's W-5 I'll always remember Mike as one of the strongest yet gentle and sincere producers for whom I ever worked. He was a wonderful, wonderful man.

I worked with Mike at W5 and he was the most amazing mentor and friend to me as I started out my career in journalism. He was a good friend to me someone I could always count on. After I moved to the UK, Mike kindly sent me a lovely book for my son when he was born and I appreciated this so much. I have some amazing memories of working with him.

Dear Michelle, you have lost a wonderful partner. All of us who knew Mike, loved and admired him for all the qualities you have mentioned. He died too young. I so wish I could join you as you remember him but my thoughts are with you.
