Peter MORAWETZ Obituary

MORAWETZ, Peter 1950 - 2022 Peter Morawetz, died peacefully, with MAiD, surrounded by loved ones in his home on October 6th. Peter grew up in Toronto with loving parents, John and Maureen, and his four sisters, where a highlight of his young life was watching the Leafs win the Cup on numerous occasions in the 60s from high up in a standing room at MLG. While the Leafs never reached such heights again, Peter remained a fan for life. He was also a keen golf, tennis, and squash player, gaining many friends on the courts and the greens. As a teenager, he attended Neuchatel College in '67, where he made lifelong friends. He earned his degree in Engineering at UofT, though many observed his true major was in the game of bridge. In 1981, he married the love of his life, Michelle (Daly), which he considered perhaps the best decision he ever made. He spent many happy days with his family in Muskoka and built more than one memorable tree fort for the younger generation. Peter began his career at Colgate-Palmolive. Throughout his professional years, he made friends with many colleagues, ending by running his own business with the able assistance of his friend, Bob. While Peter will be remembered as an avid player of bridge, sports, cryptic crosswords and Scrabble, and enjoyer of fine cheeses, black coffee, and strong martinis, his most lasting impression will be his great capacity for friendship, the compassion and humour of his conversation, his excellent advice, and the dignity and optimism with which he faced the challenges of his final years. He is survived by his wife, Michelle; children, Zoe and David; predeceased by his sister, Sylvia; survived by sisters, Sonja (Steven), Virginia (George), and Kathryn (Ted); brother-in-law, Patrick (Sarah); many loving cousins, nieces, nephews and friends; and Mitzie the puggle. His family wishes to recognize and thank Dee for the many years of dedicated care she provided as his support worker, and thank his other caregivers, Jenny, Joseph, Joey, Andy and Reyva, for their care, which contributed so greatly to his quality of life in his final months. Donations in his memory may be made to Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation or MAiDHouse. There will be a celebration of Peter's life at a later date.

This is a beautiful tribute to a truly lovely man. Michelle & I met at St. Mildreds College in about Grade 6, & became lifelong friends. Through Michelle I met Peter. He too became a dear friend. I am in awe of the kind & wonderful man that he was, always a "glass half full" outlook on life. He was calm & caring, witty & warm, a perfect life companion for Michelle, & loving father to Zoe & David. My heart goes out to the whole family. You are all in my thoughts & prayers.
With love,
Jennifer (Redwood)

To the Morawetz Family
I am so sorry to hear about Peter's death. Of course I knew him the best when we were kids at the cottage and he was always so smart and kind and hilarious and so patient with the "little kids". I remember great adventures at Belle Isle. Your obituary is beautiful and so captures the Peter I remember from my youth. Clearly these same qualities carried him into adulthood where he touched everyone who knew him. Buck told me how courageous Peter was in facing his illness with "a glass is half full" spirit. My heart goes out to all of you. Much Love Toni

Our sincere sadness and condolences to the family as you said goodbye to Peter and as you will continue to mourn his loss. I first met Peter in the late 70s while working at Colgate Palmolive. I soon learned of his friendliness and kindness, the same as exemplified by his parents and siblings when invited to their cottage with my young family. Our lives moved us in different directions but we reconnected briefly when visiting him along with Michelle, Zoe and David in the 80s. It was in 2018 that a conversation with Peter left me stunned with his medical diagnosis and Michelle's condition. Since that time we have visited Peter in April and August of this year where he informed me of his continuing struggles and the resource of MAiD, a service new to me. Throughout his ordeals he maintained his humor, dignity, caring and yes optimism! My friend and colleague, we will miss you, pray for your family left behind and your children as they continue supporting Michelle.

My deepest sympathy to Zoe and David, and to all your extended family at this very sad time. Peter was a truly remarkable gentleman, and Michelle chose the perfect spouse and partner for life. I remember the celebratory spirit of Peter & Michelle's wedding as if it were yesterday, and the transparent joy in Michelle's face as she hugged me and said "I've married the most AMAZING man, Alixe!" And she had! Compassionate, kind, unswerving, tender & loyal--Peter had all the attributes she needed, and more, for the years ahead. And she was perfect for him too.... I send you my deepest Sympathy and my heartfelt Condolences at this difficult time. Alixe Buckerfield de la Roche
