Claire COOPER Obituary

On Tuesday, August 21 our dear Mom succumbed to a stroke at the Lachine Hospital of the McGill University Health Centre in the West Island of Montreal. Born August 24, 1938, in Bayonne, France, Claire (née Rodrigues) arrived in Canada in the 1950s. After living in Toronto and then in Montreal in the 1960s & 1970s, she moved to Victoria in 1982. Her last fourteen years were spent happily and comfortably in Oak Bay at The Dorchester.

Predeceased by parents Robert Rodrigues and Lucienne Suarès, Claire is the eldest of four sisters and is mourned by Danielle Basset, Eliane Rodrigues, and Michelle Cederberg as well as nephews François, Patrick & Bruno Basset and Eric Cederberg.

Her sons Daniel, Philippe, and Bernard, and their father Paul Cooper survive and grieve her passing, as do grandchildren Benjamin and Jessica Cooper, Colette and Matthew Cooper, and Liam Cooper-Brown.

Claire was a long-time volunteer at the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria. In the last few years, Claire withdrew from many social engagements due to the relentless advance of Alzheimer's disease. Buried at Montreal's Mount Royal Cemetery on the day that would have been her 80th birthday, we honoured the memory of a gracious & gentle lady. Donations to the Alzheimer Society of Canada are appreciated. http://alzheimer.ca

My sincere condolences to all of Claire's family, especially those I knew, Bernard, Michelle and Paul. Claire often talked to me about her sons Daniel, Philippe, their families as well as her other sisters. My last time with Claire was a beautiful summer walk to get a few things in the village like bread and milk. She then made me a cup of tea and we had a nice chat and as usual she was delightful company.
Working full time meant I didn't get to visit her very often. I only learned of Claire's passing when my Holiday card was returned to me by Canada Post. I had been away all of January for a family reunion. I am very sad for all of you and hope your good memories will help comfort you in your loss. Love to all from Madeleine and Michel.
