Elizabeth BEATTY Obituary

We are saddened to announce the sudden but peaceful passing of Elizabeth “Liz” Beatty on the morning of July 23rd at Royal Jubilee Hospital. An effervescent and loving fixture in the town of Sidney and North Saanich’s dog parks, she will be remembered and missed by many.

Liz always led with love. After growing up in Maplewood, NJ, the daughter of Walter and Manie Williams Jr. Her love of fashion led her to a job in New York City and her first husband, Marvin “Nick” Nicholson, a Canadian. They married in the fall of 1967 and shortly after moved to Toronto where they raised three sons: Walter, Marvin Jr. and Peter. Nick and her father tragically passed in short succession in 1980. Ever resilient and loving, she focused on doing her best for her boys. Love followed again in 1985 when she married John Beatty. In the summer of 1987 they moved to Victoria, British Columbia where they both took an active role in the community and building many lifelong friendships. In February of 2009, she endured the passing of her youngest son, Peter. Yet, as always, she led with love and found a way to carry on - keeping him in her heart everyday. In 2017, she became a grandmother for the first time and loved every second of being “Nan”.

Liz found great joy and happiness padding the trails of Horth Hill with her constant companion, Diva - a charismatic standard poodle, along with a group of fellow dog lovers who became the dearest of friends and part of her extended family. She also enjoyed a good game of bridge and played regularly with two groups of friends; Friday was with the Saskatchewan Ladies and the Monday game at the Victoria Golf Club where she proudly “made the frame” a number of times.

If you knew Liz - you knew what love felt like. You knew when she was with you, she was right there: present, engaged, curious and joyous. She loved freely and far. She never missed a chance to do little things that would brighten a moment, a day or a soul.

The family would like to thank all of the health care professionals at the Saanich Peninsula Hospital and the Royal Jubilee Hospital for their compassionate care and kindness.

Liz is survived by her sister Stephanie Detjens (John), her sons Walter and Marvin Nicholson (Helen) and her grandsons North and Shepard.

In lieu of flowers or a service during these unusual times, the best way to honor Liz’s memory would be to commit a random act of kindness that brings a smile to you and someone else.

Liz Beatty had the zest of life. I worked for Liz maintaining her irrigation system.
Rocky (my dog) and I would always look forward to seeing Liz. She would always have a little treat for Rocky and no matter my mood she would make me feel and I would leave feeling better then when I came.
We will miss her, amazing woman.

I want to add my voice to the many who expressed shock and sadness about Liz's passing and send my condolences to her family and friends. I was another who met Liz and Diva at Horth Hill. My dog and I and other walking friends encountered them regularly on our morning walks. Diva would bark her greetings and we would enjoy a friendly smile and chat with Liz. It was part of the pleasure we took in our daily outings to the Park. She will always be fondly remembered among the regular walkers at Horth Hill.

I had the pleasure of meeting Liz when I was the Manager at the RBC Sidney Branch from 1987-1992. Our paths crossed again when I was transferred to the Broadmead Branch. Who can forget her warm and genuine smile. She was so proud of her family and her 3 boys; Marvin, Walt and Peter. She was thrilled when she had the opportunity through Marvin to go to the White House during the Obama administration to help decorate the Christmas trees. A live well lived

So sad to hear Liz has left us. I was an occasional recipient of poodle love on dog walks when I was visiting my mum Ann in Sydney, who was a great friend of Liz’s as was my father before his passing a number of years ago. I saw many a thoughtful present, beautifully wrapped always, visits from Liz, and many fun “girls” lunches and glasses of wine with the dog walkers while on flying visits to the “south”. It will be a sad day when I next join my mum with the dog walkers and give Diva a pat without her “mum” being there. Thanks so much Liz, such a pleasure to have known you.

We had a short but privileged friendship with Mrs. Beatty who we affectionately called "Mrs. Beauty" - she radiated beauty, inside and out. As her dry-cleaner, we admired how well dressed she was - all the time, with no exception. She was a very engaging, loving person who we will fondly remember yet miss, ever so terribly.

My children and I became fast friends with Liz and Diva while they hiked the trails of Horth Hill, rain or shine, with Deb and Tula in tow. (Who was walking whom?) Luckily for us, they passed by our house on their ventures, so much like clockwork that my 3 year old daughter, Emma, would say “Mommy, is it time to go outside to see Diva and Tula?” We would race to the fence and enjoy our chats, a little solace of normalcy for us all during these times away from family. Sharing stories and many photos and videos of her adorable grandkids, Liz quickly took to little Emma (3) and Theodore (1). With a shared love of a local artist who creates fairy doors, there began a little something special. Emma would venture out to check on her fairy door at the edge of our property and something magical would be there. A fairy sticker book, a real birds nest, flowers or one day, a precious little fairy, Emma’s eyes would beam with wonderment and excitement. I always knew Liz was behind these magical moments. That was her - caring, loving and simply....magical.

We still can't believe she's gone... Liz had a way of making everything extra-special, and she truly lived life to the fullest. When you've been in Liz' circle, you are certain to have amazing memories of her special touches - the cucumber sandwiches cut with the appropriate cookie cutter for the occasion, or the gift of a wine bottle beautifully wrapped in tissue paper. Liz had a smile and a kind word for everyone, and I have immense admiration for her. What an inspiration and a life well-lived!

I have been Liz‘s hairdresser for years and her love for her family was “over the moon “. She had so many stories about her books she would read on video her grandkids. What a true gift those videos will be even more so now. I am so sorry to all of Liz’s family and friends. I know how much she cherished each of you. Her hours making funny animal shape lunch goodies last year for the children. She was proud as punch and showed me all her photos. Liz was one of the kindest, caring people I knew. Always a beautiful smile on her face. This news is so very sad. I just saw her less than 2 weeks ago and I know how much she was missing her family due to travel restrictions. I hope there is peace for each of you knowing that you were each so very loved and cherished. Rest peacefully my friend.

Like so many others, I am heart-broken that Liz is gone. We became “forest friends” six years ago and knowing Liz transformed my life. Until that chance meeting in the woods, I knew no one in North Saanich and I had lived here 8 years. Suddenly I was surrounded by friends and support and the FF’s went from six to eleven and to a sisterhood that shared everything. Liz shared her friends and her love and I was the recipient of many of those acts of kindness she was known for. I hope she knew how much that love was returned. Knowing Liz was a gift and I will try to live up to the high standard of caring that was so much a part of her life, for the rest of mine.
