Hans HEIMLICH Obituary

Dr. Hans J. Heimlich, Victoria physician & surgeon for over 30 years, passed on February 23rd at the age of 91. Predeceased by Ruth, his wife of 63 years (2018). Father of six: twins Karin (Jeff) and Sandra (Terry), Karl (Paula), Andre (passed 1990), twins Angela (Serge) and Barbara (Tom). Also very close to Ruth's eldest daughter Sharon (Ray). Eight grandchildren (aka, little creeps) Kirsten (Jonny), Ryan, Kaylee, Kristopher, Alexa, Stephan, Maxim and Michaela and great-grandson, Indy. Survived by sister Traudel and two half-sisters Inge (Bert) and Christa.
Arriving in Canada from Germany in 1952, Dad made many lifelong pals. He survived them all and missed each one. Two main characters in Dad's life were Andy Vasilev and Herbert Siebner. The stories of their antics are legendary within our family. They are together again creating mischief.
Dad enjoyed being an old school kind of doctor. He delivered many, many Victoria babies, made thousands of house calls and continued to check in with elderly patients well into retirement.
Dad's big heart for our cats and dachshunds, as well as for animals of all kinds is a memory we will cherish. In lieu of flowers, donations to SPCA / Wild ARC in Dad's memory would honour his great affection for all creatures.
The family truly thanks Selkirk and Rest Haven staff for their patience and excellent care.
Our father was most clear on this: no memorial. A small private gathering for family and close friends will be arranged at a future date.

Dr. Heimlich was my doctor for many years and delivered both of my children. I felt he was a first class doctor.

Dr. Heimlich was our family physician during the 60´s until he retired. He made house calls...I well remember his sense of humor, his intelligence, his compassion and his willingness to listen. A first class family physician.

Yes Hans and Herbert and their charades. The suitcase handle on a wheel of cheese or smuggling back salami from overseas. I hope they are reunited and causing a ruckus.

There will never be another Dr. Heimlich. He was our family Dr. since the early 1960's until he retired. Sometimes he would just "drop by" the house for coffee because he was "in the neighborhood." And he made many house calls for medical reasons as well. My Mom and him would "pick on each other," and I'm sure they are doing that again now. Thank you Dr. Heimlich for being everything a REAL Dr. should be.

He was a good friend to my father and we would visit every now and then. The stories those two elderly gentlemen told were sometimes quite politically incorrect, but interesting nonetheless.

What a great guy! Met him first when he was working as an
orderly at VGH and I was first aid man on an ambulance.
Hard working, incredibly conscientious family doc with a sly
wicked sense of humour. Ruth, kids, Porsches and daschunds
In my memory bank!
Paper work and administration very bothersome!
Heartfelt condolences to all the Heimlichs and their intimates!

Dr. Heimlich will be deeply missed. He became our family doctor when we immigrated to Canada, and what a dear kind doctor he was. Always attentive, never hesitating to return calls, or make late night home visits. He and his wife Ruth ran a wonderful doctor´s practice, even as a child I enjoyed going there. Some people come into our lives, leave footprints on our hearts, and we are never the same. Our sincerest condolences to Hans`s family. The world has been a better place having had Dr. Hans Heimlich in it.

I do remember when I was in the 9th grade coming down with a really bad fever, Dr. Heimlich made a house call to our home to check up on me. He really put my mother's mind at ease. RIP Dr. Heimlich

Our deepest condolences to Han's family and the many whom his life touched. The world has lost a very special person. Hans was a friend and colleague of many years. Yes, he was an old-school doctor. He was our family doctor for over 25 years, and what a wonderful physician he was! His kindness and concern helped us in so many ways as we raised our family and went through some difficult times. As a colleague, I remember how he would come into the Jubilee Emergency Department to see his patients no matter what the time of day, and in the middle of the night to check on them, bring us chocolate, complete medical histories, and spend a bit of quiet time with us. A life well lived!

Dr, Hans Heimlich was our family doctor for many years and was a wonderful man. He would even come to our house to help with some illness issues. His wife trained with my sister as a nurse at St Joseph's Hospital School of Nursing. He had lovely daughters and one worked for the provincial NDP at the Legislature. He will be missed!! Much love to his family.
