YEAGER, Howard
Howard Yeager died on June 2, 2024 in Victoria, BC after a long illness at age 80. He was born on December 24, 1943 in Pittsburgh, Pa., the second of three sons of Howard V. and Lucille Yeager. He received bachelor's and master's degrees in chemistry from the Universities of Pittsburgh and Wisconsin-Madison, and a Ph.D. in analytical chemistry at the University of Alberta in 1969 at age twenty five. After a year teaching at Wisconsin he joined the Department of Chemistry at the University of Calgary in 1970, where he created its first teaching and research programs in analytical chemistry. He also became a university administrator, serving first as Head of the Department of Chemistry and then as Associate Vice President (Academic and Planning) where he advocated for institutional innovation. He widely published research in the field of polymer membrane science, and became an internationally recognized expert and consultant to both public and private sectors. He was also a media commentator and public speaker to diverse audiences on science-related topics.
He and his wife emerita art professor Marcia Perkins spent their retirement years on Vancouver Island. They shared many travel adventures together, and especially enjoyed hiking with their dogs. He was a wine maker and an avid cook among other interests.
He is survived by Marcia, her daughter Shelly Joyner and Shelly's children Brei and her daughter Flora, Quinn and Oliver, stepsister Emily Yeager (Paul) and their sons Seth and Douglas and their families, and his stepsister Janis Yeager (Rodger). His brothers Paul and Rodger Yeager predeceased him.
