Oh Madame, you have inspired so many. I love the smile you always had to share (especially that 2nd of April - the last time that I was late to class in favor of a conversation with you!), and the joy you had for teaching. Your joie de vivre lives on, toujours. Tu me manques, et je me souviens.

There hasn't been one day that has passed since April 16 that I have not thought about Madame. I was lucky enough to have her for two semesters my sophomore year at Virginia Tech. She was the kindest professor I have ever had and will never forget her generosity. On the day of the final of my second semester I had the wrong time for the exam and missed it by 2 hours. I emailed her so upset, thinking that I was going to fail the class because I wrote down the wrong time. Not only did she let me make up the exam (even when she knew I had skipped several classes throughout the semester), she corrected it after I was finished and told me that I should pursue my studies in French at Virginia Tech. And so I did, here I am today with my Bachelor of Arts in French and I am not sure if I would have pursued it without her encouragement. Merci Madame, vous nous manquez, je ne vous oublierai jamais.

Do not stand at my grave and weep.
I am not there, I do not sleep.
I am the sparkle in the snow.
I am the shredded leaves that blow.
I am the sunlight on growing grain.
I am the gentle summer rain.
I am the quiet bird at night.
Circling about; Taking flight.
So do not stand at my grave and weep.
I am not there, I do not sleep.

RISE UP SLOWLY, ANGEL

Rise up, slowly, Angel.
I cannot let you go.
Just drift softly midst the faces,
In sorrow now bent low.

Ease the searing anger,
Born in harsh unyielding truth
That Death could steal my loved one
From the glowing blush of youth.

Rise up slowly, Angel.
Do not leave me here alone,
Where the warmth of mortal essence
Lies replaced by cold, hard stone.

Speak to me in breezes
Whispered through the drying leaves,
And caress my brow with raindrops
Filtered by the sheltering trees.

Rise up slowly, Angel,
For I cannot hear the song
Which calls you through the shadows
Into the light beyond.

Wrap me in your downy cape
Of sunshine, warm with love,
And kiss a tear-stained mother's face
With moonlight from above.

Then wait for me at sunset,
Beside the lily pond,
And guide me safely homeward
To your world,which lies beyond.

Just spread your wings and take me
In reunion’s sweet embrace,
And we shall soar, together,
To a different time and place.

To The Couture-Novak Family:
I am writing this brief note to your family because I so deeply feel that when we are faced with the sudden loss of someone so very dear to us that it is one of the hardest things in our lives we will have to face. Yet, I would like to share with you something that touched my heart, it is the knowledge that God will respond to our persistent prayers to help us through any tough time such as this. At Philippians 4:6 and 7 it says that "the peace of God that excels all thought will guard your heart and your mental powers." Please know that my prayers are with you at this time and I urge you to continue to pray for strength to get through the rough moments ahead.

I am very saddened to hear about the loss of Jocelyne. I always enjoyed speaking to Jocelyne while teaching tennis to her daughter Sylvie. We would talk often about Polish food and she took such pleasure and excitement in watching Sylvie on the tennis court. She was always smiling and took in every word that was said to her. My thoughts and prayers are with her family and I will always remember the smile that Jocelyne wore every time I saw her. It was an honor to know her.

Jocelyne Couture-Nowak torpedoes through H2O
One hand over the other she goes faster than slow
Her legs help row her to win
A medal because she knows how to swim
She kneels next to her husband in the dirt
Enjoying their time together with her garden flirt
They’d plant and plow then it’s time to look around
To explore every spot, every place, every bit of ground
They have bond so amazing it’s something to envy
Her being wonderful is the essential key
A mother, a wife, a professor of French
Jocelyne was someone that made liking her a synch

Madame,
Do you remember the day I didn't come to class and then we bumped into each other at Boudreaux's downtown later that night? I thought for sure I was done for, but even then you were so happy to see me, and I was so happy to see you. I wish I could go back in time and get up for that 9:05 am class, just to have been able to spend that time with you. I hope you enjoyed my speech yesterday afternoon in the garden on campus and the roses I left at your office door last week. there really are no words to describe you or flowers beautiful enough to thank you with. I'll see you next class, up there. A la prochaine!

Be Still

Be still like the grass on a melancholy summer day
Be still like desert shrub.

Be calm and you will hear your loved one speak, in the stillness, in the calm, their love resounds.

If you are still this promise I make, you will hear the voice of your loved one helping you along your way.

I pray for you, Mr. Nowak and the children every day, pushing you up, up up before someone who said that He came to heal the broken-hearted. I love the language your very loved one loved. Your bonnie joy in life drew the line between good and evil. The last day was a line drawn. The closer you draw to God, the closer you dwell on the side of good, where your very loved one stood.

Be blessed by her every kindness, her uncommon life. You were blessed every day by her. I hope you will continue to find ways to be a blessing to others, never giving in to darkness. Always reaching for light. Never letting any darkness separate you from the light of love.

Closer to God. Further from evil. Closer to love.

I did not know you or your family. But I don’t believe there is a person in the world whose heart has not been touched by this tragedy. There is nothing in this life that brings us more sorrow than to lose loved ones in death. Even harder to bear is when the lives of loved ones are lost due to an unexpected tragedy. The shock can be overwhelming.
Be assured that God promises that he…”is near to those that are broken at heart; and those who are crushed in spirit he saves.” (Psalms 34:18) Nothing can bring us more peace of mind than the inspired words of… the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our tribulations. (2 Corinthians 1:3,4) Take comfort and solace in the Bible's message as we all await the time when GOD…” will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away.” (Revelation 21:3,4)

April 21, 2007

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man."

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.
