There hasn't been one day that has passed since April 16 that I have not thought about Madame. I was lucky enough to have her for two semesters my sophomore year at Virginia Tech. She was the kindest professor I have ever had and will never forget her generosity. On the day of the final of my second semester I had the wrong time for the exam and missed it by 2 hours. I emailed her so upset, thinking that I was going to fail the class because I wrote down the wrong time. Not only did she let me make up the exam (even when she knew I had skipped several classes throughout the semester), she corrected it after I was finished and told me that I should pursue my studies in French at Virginia Tech. And so I did, here I am today with my Bachelor of Arts in French and I am not sure if I would have pursued it without her encouragement. Merci Madame, vous nous manquez, je ne vous oublierai jamais.

I am writing this brief note to your family because I so deeply feel that when we are faced with the sudden loss of someone so very dear to us that it is one of the hardest things in our lives we will have to face. Yet, I would like to share with you something that touched my heart, it is the knowledge that God will respond to our persistent prayers to help us through any tough time such as this. I am very saddened to hear about the loss of Jocelyne. I always enjoyed speaking to Jocelyne while teaching tennis to her daughter Sylvie. We would talk often about Polish food and she took such pleasure and excitement in watching Sylvie on the tennis court. She was always smiling and took in every word that was said to her. My thoughts and prayers are with her family and I will always remember the smile that Jocelyne wore every time I saw her. It was an honor to know her.

Do you remember the day I didn't come to class and then we bumped into each other at Boudreaux's downtown later that night? I thought for sure I was done for, but even then you were so happy to see me, and I was so happy to see you. I wish I could go back in time and get up for that 9:05 am class, just to have been able to spend that time with you. I hope you enjoyed my speech yesterday afternoon in the garden on campus and the roses I left at your office door last week. there really are no words to describe you or flowers beautiful enough to thank you with. I did not know you or your family. But I don’t believe there is a person in the world whose heart has not been touched by this tragedy. There is nothing in this life that brings us more sorrow than to lose loved ones in death. Even harder to bear is when the lives of loved ones are lost due to an unexpected tragedy. It has been 20 some years since I last saw Jocelyne and it appears she hasn't changed.
