I would like to extend my deepest sympathies to John’s family and friends. Although I never had the pleasure of meeting John, I felt that I got to know a part of him when, while doing research for my book on the 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion, I came across his narrative report on his escape from German custody during the latter stages of the Second World War. I found the report so fascinating that I included it word-for-word in my book. John was obviously a great Canadian and a man who dedicated his life to serving our country, and for that he has my eternal gratitude. Rest in peace, John.

Our deepest sympathies on the passing of your Dad.... Our father, Bob Mahar (Capt. RCR - Retired) served with your father in Korea in 1952, recalled he and your mother with fondness, and was saddened to hear of your father's passing when I spoke with him last night in London, Ont. Your Dad served our country with bravery & distinction....We're grateful for his service. Our thoughts are with you.

Mike & Family:

I had the pleasure of spending a wonderful day at a Lynx game with you and your Dad a few years back. It was most memorable - the game was long over before the engaging conversations were. My sympathies to you and your family at this sad time. He was a remarkable man.
