Charlie Johnson Obituary


JOHNSON, Charlie Edwin Charlie Johnson passed away on April 18th, 2010 at the Saanich Peninsula Hospital at the age of 89. He leaves behind his loving wife Marjorie, with whom he shared 68 years of wonderful marriage; his three sons and daughter; multiple grandchildren and greatgrandChildren. Johnny, as he was known by his wife and airforce friends, served in the RCAF during and after WW 2, rising from AC2 to Flight Lieutenant. He was a Ham Radio operator from his teenage years as VE4XO in Winnipeg , VE6LU in Edmonton, and VE7WO here in Victoria. He was co-founder and First President of the Winipeg DX club which met at the Airforce Officers Mess in February 1962. He was the global leading DX Operator, with 378 countries confirmed when he stopped being active in Ham Radio. He retired from the Canadian Pacific Railway in 1983, after a stellar career which spanned over four decades, with positions in Winnipeg, Edmonton, Vancouver and finally in Victoria, where he was the Manager of Northern Development. More recently, Charlie was active in Fantasy Hockey, as he led his league and was 130th in world ranking out of 50,000 participants in the 2009/10 season. Most importantly, Charlie was an adoring husband; a loving father; and a very special friend. He will be sadly missed. A Memorial Service will be held for immediate family members. Donations in lieu of flowers should be provided to the Saanich Peninsula Hospital Foundation. 586718

We shared many hours together over the years, mainly centered around our mutual hobby, ham radio.
I shall miss his warm sense of humour very much.
