Jeffrey Bird Obituary

Jeffrey A. Bird
Jeffrey A. Bird, age 28, of Canton, passed away suddenly Dec. 23 at his residence. He was born in Canton on Aug. 3, 1978 to Robert and Candace Bird, graduated from St. Mary School in Massillon and from Jackson High School in 1997. Jeff attended Lander University in Greenwood, SC, and was on the President's List. He also participated actively that year in medical research on autism, mentoring under Dr. Ron Michaelis. Jeff then attended University of California, San Diego, and performed research on colon cancer in the biochemistry labs division of UCSD under Dr. Jean Wang. This research was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science in 2005. Jeff enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He loved to read and to take walks with his puppy Thor. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his sister Jennifer, his brother Jack, his grandparents Francis and Therese Horning, uncle John and Aunt Karen Bird, and numerous cousins and friends. All will miss his wonderful smile, his sense of humor, and his kind and caring presence. A private service for family and closest friends to celebrate Jeff's life is being planned. Memorial contributions may be made to the Research Division, c/o Dr. Charles Schwartz, Greenwood Genetics Center, 113 Gregor Mendel Circle, Greenwood, SC 29646.
To our beloved Jeff:
We've known lots of pleasure
At times we endured pain
We took happy walks in sunshine
And we walked in the rain.
Now we are separated
And for a time apart.
But we are not alone --
You're forever in our hearts.

Jeff was a close friend of my brother for many years and it is hard to remember a time when stories did not include him. I will miss hearing of his accomplishments and antics. My heart goes out to his family. May their memories of the joy and love he brought to their lives carry them through the years to come.

Dear Candy and Bob,
My heart goes out to you. I felt so sad when I read the news of Jeff's death in the paper. Even though I had not seen him since I babysat for him years ago when he went to The Academy Pre-School and he came back to my house after school along with my son, Will. He was a great kid and I am sure a great young man. My thoughts and prayers are with you all. Sincerely,
Carol Moorehead

Man this is really hard to accept....but i know in my heart jeff is finally happy and at peace. I experienced some of the best times of my life with Jeff (and company!) and made many lasting memories. I always thought about him and the crazy times we all shared and will continue to do so and keep him in my prayers. Everyone please use this time to reflect and learn from the past, and count on a hopeful future. Much love to you all.

I knew Jeff very well in high school. We were very close at one point in our lives. We had little contact the past few years. Although we were no longer close I thought about Jeff often. Jeff was a gentle heart. I will cherish my memories of him. My heart goes out to his family. With deepest sympathy,Margaret

I became friends with Jeff when I was in high school. It's been many years since the last time I've seen him, but I can still picture his smile and remember his laugh like it was yesterday. Jeff was a very unique individual and I know I'll never meet anyone quite like him again. My heart goes out to Jeff's family and friends.

I knew Jeff from St. Mary. Just last week, he came to mind and I wondered whatever happened to the young man who was one of my closest friends in 6th grade and who always got me in trouble in class because he made me laugh so loud. His heart - always warm and loving - will be forever remembered. Jeff, you and your family are in my thoughts and prayers.

Jeff was one of my closest friends for almost 13 and a half years. We traveled to some beautiful places and met lots of great people together. Experiences, especially onversations with Jeff, were always meaningful. A sense of growth and learning came out of being friends with him. I even knew Jeff before we were close, as we played tennis at the same age at Shady Hollow. He was so good at such a young age. I can't explain how I miss him. I will love Jeff and his family forever.
